So I just found this through Stumble and I am curious how this is freeware…
Spiceworks is not freeware - it is ad supported - http://www.spiceworks.com/keep-it-free/

… and how others are using this.
I use this to keep tabs on multiple family owned and operated businesses. I can see when someone installs something somewhere and promptly uninstall it or notify the business owner. Most of the family business run off of a 1 or 2 desktop solution so having domain policies preventing user access to install isn’t practicle. I also use it as my ticketing system to support the systems I watch over.

Are you concerned with Spiceworks accessing your network?
Spiceworks doesn’t access my network. I am using the software to scan my networks. The data never leaves my networks. Here is the privacy page… Spiceworks Privacy Policy

How do you feel that this is free?
How do I feel? Great! The community is very active in supporting this platform - and everything else IT related. Usually you only get what you pay for. With SW, you get over 1 million IT professionals to “bounce” things off of.

Are there any concerns that you had initially, that were addressed through usage?
I had no concerns but I did start slow. The more I dig into things, the better off I feel. Not a security better, a professional better. I know I have an awesome product to leverage support to those who ask me.

We’re a small company, but large enough to need a good ticketing system and not back and forth emails.
This is a wonderful help desk solution. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that other pay-for-use solutions have but in the last few years I have seen the SW product evolve to what it is today. I have been a beta tester for SW since 4.0 and I love it.

I have loaded this locally and gave it few credentials for network discovery. Is there anything anyone can suggest for testing?
Use Remote Collectors wherever you can.

They can offload the resource intensive scans to other servers while your central SW server will remain fast for user access. If there is something you don’t understand - ask! We are fairly quick to respond and usually you will get more than one way to get the job done. Secondly, keep those that helped you updated on the issue. We like to know if what we suggested worked for you or not. Lastly, reward us. Fellow Spiceheads (Spiceworks users) like to get spicier, giving the best answer or helpful post to people that deserve it goes a long way.
I hope this helped!
