Spiceworks support end for desktop app.

Hi,

Hope all are doing well.

I am currently using Spiceworks Helpdesk desktop application Version 7.5.00107 from past 10 years. My question is if, I am keep using it after support ending, does my Helpdesk desktop app still working without any hassle.

If yes, what services I cannot get from Spiceworks?

If no, what is the way to keep using the Spiceworks helpdesk desktop version?

Please look into the thread of the EOL announcement to find further details .

Yes, it will continue to work although you should expect hassles to increase over time. More and more functionality will be lost over time.

Please read the recommendations in the afore mentioned thread. It recommends to do some preparatory testing without Internet access for the legacy application. So far, I’ve not seen any Spicehead reporting back about such testing and what was needed to keep functionality despite isolation of Internet, even by those intending to continue using it beyond EOL.

Another option is to move to Cloud Help Desk (CHD) or to Help Desk Server (HDS). Some info for the first migration path is referenced in your legacy desktop app in its dashboard since last week.

Why do I see your user account to be one week old when you report using this legacy edition in its current version already for 10 years?
Do you have other Spiceworks accounts for such usage?
Do you want a merge of such Spiceworks accounts?

I’m curious to know how you succeeded to use this current version for many years longer than i has been released. Perhaps such miracles may also help to loose less functionality after EOL and at a slower path. And as you report using that edition already for a decade, you might not yet be aware of the recommendations of our field guides. The one on getting started will improve your community participation.

Does exporting .JASON backup file contains all the users details and their relevant tickets. According to me JSON file only contains Tickets not the users associated…Am I right?

That’s incorrect - the JSON export from the Desktop app contains users, admins, custom attributes, and tickets/ticket history. This is documented here:

As Brendan has already mentioned, you’re not right. And depending on history and volume, it may either not contain all data or at least not import all data. The documentation reports the limitations on age and attachment size for inclusion in import.

Do you recommend me to use the same Desktop App after EOL?

As I found result from all above discussion, desktop app will work after even EOL but we did not get any support from Spiceworks…Right?

That’s partly true - if you use the app already in an offline environment, and you’re not using the Inventory component, you’ll be fine.

Are you using an on-premises Exchange or other mail server?

Yes, I am using on premises exchange server as well as hybrid model too.

Some of the users are on Prem and some of the users are on hybrid model.

The risk is that when O365, Google, etc… begin to force MFA, the Desktop app will no longer function properly.

If you want to stick with Spiceworks and with on-premise, then Spiceworks Help Desk Server (HDS) might be an alternative too. It may run in a VM or natively on Ubuntu. Sooner or later, the legacy app will loose more and more of its features. HDS still has a smaller feature set. And import of your tickets of your legacy system into HDS should work to a significant extent.

Might not be such a horrible thing to lose tickets from years past. Who cares if there’s a ticket about a server issue from 10 years ago.

The OP nor anybody did it. Nobody was already able to run the legacy Spiceworks desktop app beyond EOL as EOL is coming in one weeks time. At least as far as I’m aware, no Spicehead succeeded in time traveling although some encounters with (inappropriately configured) Windows time service may provide such an impression.

And please report back about your findings as so far no Spicehead has reported back about such preparations and hence it remains unclear if any Spicehead has run such recommended preparatory tests.
