Currently we’re paying ~$130/year for Network Solutions SSL certs for our servers. I’ve seen offers for a 10 computer SSL cert from Versisign for $2750, all the way down to a wildcard domain security certificate from GoDaddy for $100.

What’s the difference? It seems my Googled answers all come from people selling certs, and they have the best ones, of course.

Thanks–

What use are you using them for? For securing our SSL web sites for employees we use the $20 certs from GoDaddy.

For commerce we go for the $100 Network Solutions certs.

I’ve personally seen no different in behavior or acceptance. Performance is indifferent 128bit is 128bit.

verisign seems to be very well accepted, GoDaddy is OK but I would stay away from wildcard certs as they can cause certificate errors which confound users.

It really does not matter where you get the certs just be sure they are a trusted company. I only use Thawte as I have a long relationship with them

We signed up with DigiCert about a year ago and have been happy. The main reason for using them over Verisign was cost.

I agree with Robert5064 it is all about trust. There are not many technical differences (at least that I am aware of).

Kevin: These will be used for everything from ecommerce to VPN authentication…

Robert: The wildcard note is something I hadn’t heard before. I didn’t know they could be troublesome.

I also went back to the GoDaddy site, and see that actually the pricing wasn’t for a wildcard certificate, but what they call a “Multiple Domains Certificate” or a “Unified Communications Certificate”. This is also the same terminology used at Verisign’s site.

I would have thought that was just another term for wildcard certificate, but apparently it isn’t as the GoDaddy pdf brochure indicates that they ALSO offer wildcard certs.

Odd I havn’t come across any browser issues with wildcards yet. Can you elaborate some more?
