Went to buy a carton of Just Egg, which is in the refrigerated section of the store and the Best Before date was June 16th. Yesterday was July 19th. Luckily out of the dozen cartons on the shelf, 1 was dated late July.

I believe they have a month shelf life. So, you could probably be safe with those in June.

In the mid to late nineties, I worked for a grocery store. One of my jobs was price checking; I would take one of each item, mark it with the price on the shelf, and then take them up front to verify the price in the registers matched. While I did that, I also looked for outdated items. Three specific areas became very apparent to me in that store and would be something that I would highly recommend watching for. Rice cakes, salad dressing, and generic brand pop.

Out of those three, the generic brand pop was the worst. We had some orange diet pop on the bottom shelf behind another display. It had apparently sat unnoticed for four to five years past the expiration date. There was a film of something sticky coating the outside of the cans as well. Pretty gross.

When I told the clerk at customer service that the milk was out of date again (you have to say “again”), they started harder in that section.

I’m in the habit of always checking dates…can’t tell you the number of times this has saved me a return trip to the store! Especially yogurt and other dairy products that don’t move quick!

Guess you never had the luxury of eating MREs. Never knew that M&Ms introduced the white ones until I was in the Middle East.

UK products have best before date or a use by date. Best before dates are about quality, its safe to use still beyond this date, but quality may not be as good. Use by dates are a safety thing, its not recommended to consume after this date.

I think they ditched sell by dates here, and just have the best before where shops can still sell it but usually its reduced price by this date but is still usually fine. The Gov agreed with retail that it would reduce wastage allowing it to be sold but reduced rather than having to waste it off on a sell by date.

But what was the discount?

No discount, I would typically grab a shopping cart and fill it with the outdated items and then push it to the back warehouse and tell my boss that I found a bunch of outdated items. Sometimes, he would try to sell it at a discount, other times he would dispose of it. I always made sure to pull the item from the shelf to make sure it was taken care of…

As an interesting twist to the story, while I was filling the cart with the outdated pop, my mom came in and while I was elsewhere, (I also had to bag and carry out groceries,) she thought that it was a deal, so she purchased several of the outdated pop. I bagged her groceries and noticed them, but decided not to make a scene. Once outside I let her know that they were outdated. She didn’t seem to mind, so I simply loaded her groceries up and sent her on her way. (For the record, she didn’t buy any of the four to five year old pop, but she did get some pop about a year past expiration.)

She saved one for me, when I tried it, it was completely flat. :squinting_face_with_tongue:

So I googled ‘Just Egg’ as I was intrigued. I assumed a US product but wondered why it would not be called ‘egg’. The ‘Just’ being superfluous.

Imagine my surprise to find the ‘Egg’ is actually superfluous and completely misleading.

Should it not be called “Just no Egg” ?

I Can’t Believe It’s Not Egg!

I shop at Winco, which has very high turnover so I rarely see this. Or maybe I don’t buy enough obscure groceries. I figure anything with dust on it has been there too long.

They even come is different shades of known colors.

I’d love to be able to buy M&M’s at the store in select colors, since my son loves them but can’t have them due to the red-dye content…

They weren’t supposed to be white, they turned white because the package of M&Ms was like 10 yrs old.

I know. I’ve seen that before.

@HulkSmash @Repairatrooper I thought they were good for 100 years!?!

Yeah, I’m meticulous for checking dates on products while shopping. And I’m one of those who will reach way back for the milk that’s 4 days fresher. I also almost never take the front item…who knows if someone found it sitting on a shelf somewhere and stuck it back in the cooler after it had been sitting out for a couple of hours. This is also why I won’t let someone else pick my groceries for me (no delivery for me!).

Personally, I don’t get InstaCart…don’t want someone picking my items.

Sadly, the person packaging the MREs probably just sucked to color off them all.
