I am new in Networking, i have studied web development in school and i am doing a totally different learnership with this company. They currently relocated me in the IT department and most likely we deal with network and server problems. I want to study via online tutorials, so i am asking where should i start and which area of interest should i look at first? Server or DNS or DHCP?

Temoso,
First off, welcome to the IT world of networking, where all the magical network fairies and unicorns live in the cloud, and make the intertubes work. Second, It depends on what you want to do, if you are going to be dealing with networking, and servers. The best thing you can do for yourself is to get yourself certified. In what may you ask? The first I would pickup would be my Cisco CCNA, this will walk you through all your ABCs of networking, will make sure you know how to make a network work, and help you in your troubleshooting, I did network+ before, but I’m working on mine… The other is if you are going to specialize in servers as well, I’d look at getting my MCSE after you got your CCNA. This will give you a great broad base of knowledge to work from.

So you really don’t have any former IT experience but were placed in the IT department? Seems legit.
Youtube is your friend. Ask questions here on the community.
Start with the basics. Do you have any spare equipment you can play with at home and setup a small home lab? Hands on experience is the best
Good luck to you sir. Maybe start off studying for your A+ and Net+ certifications.

Comptia Net+ is a good place to start since it is a generic cert. After that you will need to pick a route. Cisco vs Microsoft etc… I would ask your coworkers what they think is relevant since they are already doing the work. They would know the culture etc…

+1 for CompTIA as a place to start. Good general knlowledge stuff.
CCNA is great but tough i would wait and get somehands on experience before trying it.
MS MCSA if you end up using windows server. 70-410/411/412
And like above, youtube is your friend. Eli the computer guy has videos on almost everything.

I would start CCNA. It is Cisco specific but it covers most of the network+ material anyway and I would say it looks better on a resume though that’s up for debate. Microsoft is always good. Play with as many different things as you can and see what you like and get their certs too.

MoDizzy, I can attest to that… They look at me strange for not having a CCNA when I do have a network+, and cisco is always what I’m grilled about when I go into a interview. Not my experience, not my server training, not my ability.
Thank you Spiceheads for your input, i will be sure to look into your suggestion. Thanks a lot again.
Hey there!
CompTIA builds vendor-neutral certifications that show employers you have the skills to do the job, regardless of the vendor of the hardware or software product. Many of these exams are also prerequisites or electives for more advanced vendor certifications. Check out this link for more information on CompTIA Network+, and of course, if you have any questions feel free to ask!
