Long story short… CCNA R&S isn’t a replacement for experience for a true networking position at any level (IE: I’m not a SysAdmin, I can’t do a “One-man-show” for a small shop with no IT staff, and the main company that hires entry-level network techs has yet to reply to my applications in two years). There’s an opening (several, actually) for entry-level security positions, with very minimal requirements (specifically, “minimal security experience required, OR a current Security+ or similar certification, OR in-progress studies for a GISF or similar certification”). I have an interest in security (but no experience), but was planning on waiting until I got a start somewhere. Since that apparently isn’t going to happen, I’m looking for options on the security front. CompTIA has basically zero reputation around here, so I’m looking for options that are affordable, but useful. CCNA-Security is an option, but I’d prefer something vendor neutral. Books apparently do not exist for GIAC certs unless you take the $5k SANS course, and that’s not viable at this point in time. What are some other relevant options? I appreciate any input, thanks!<\/p>","upvoteCount":5,"answerCount":8,"datePublished":"2015-12-15T16:47:01.000Z","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"anon88749445","url":"https://community.spiceworks.com/u/anon88749445"},"acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"
CompTIA A+ doesn’t get much love around here but Security+ is reputable as an entry level cert, especially if it’s being listed as a min requirement for a job you’re looking at. Pluralsight has a pretty good Security+ program. They also have a series dedicated to SSCP certification if that’s something you want to pursue afterward.<\/p>","upvoteCount":0,"datePublished":"2015-12-15T18:12:18.000Z","url":"https://community.spiceworks.com/t/suggestions-for-security-certification-training/458685/4","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"jsmith","url":"https://community.spiceworks.com/u/jsmith"}},"suggestedAnswer":[{"@type":"Answer","text":"
