hi all,

got a supermicro X11DPT-B-G6-NI22 and just wondering what ram to get for it

is it this one on there website?

if so il get this and fill it up

thanks,

Do you mean what spec of ram?

But yes, the memory listed is what you want.

@Rod-IT any spec really lol, just running this server as a rds server and atm it has 128gig only and there all 16gig modules so need to replace them with all the above as i dont really want to mix sizes

Must be a busy server if 128GB doesn’t cut it.

Personally I’d look at a second server rather than making one huge one - if this does down, so do all the users.

If you’re replacing them, you wont be mixing sizes.

@Rod-IT so you say 128 cuts it then, how many users you think the server can hadle with that amount of ram?

3 Spice ups

That’s an open question.

If the users are doing CAD, video encoding or some other ram intensive tasks, 1-2, if they’re just using office based products and some web traffic 30-50 or so.

Throwing ram at a server is all good, but ensure it’s needed.

Do some calculations, I’ve no idea what the CPUs are, what the users will do, but take a single user and what they will be doing, assume this would be a new device for them, if a laptop with 2-4 cores and 8GB ram is enough for the apps they need, a similar, spec per user on RDS will be your target, though if you’re publishing apps, not desktops, then the spec per user can often be a little lower.

@Rod-IT

basically there going to use it to start transfers ie just copy data back and forth from one mapped drive to another and go on a few websites

I’d script the copies to happen automatically, but even with that being done manually, I’d be aiming for 50-75 users.

Surely not all users at the same time will be copying though.

Nothing being done is demanding.

If you use Chrome, ensure it’s configured for RDS and be aware that multiple tabs will chew up ram - this is the only place I’d consider more, but I’d run it as is first, before spending money.

how you confgure chrome for rds?

Personally, I’d stick with Edge.

Chrome is a resource hog.

You might check your system specs from the manufacturer, as there is a max RAM limit and you might be at it, if it’s already at 128GB. I know newer systems can handle much higher, but you might just be wasting your money if this is an older system and you don’t check first.

From the link posted above

  • Up to 6TB 3DS ECC RDIMM, DDR4-2933MHz; Up to 6TB 3DS ECC LRDIMM, DDR4-2933MHz

to find the RAM take a look at Kingston.com and look up the motherboard.

Hmm, says 1.5TB for plain RDIMM, so he hits the limit faster because it was populated with RDIMM’s if he keeps them.

The LRDIMM’s will have more latency tho…

Note: OP’s machine can NOT mix types. (The article suggests doing this, it is referring to a different machine that can do that)

Never a fan of the ‘low-torque’ solutions, which is what I perceive the LRDIMM as.
When you can add 300% More-Power, it is certainly enticing though…

OK, the gif is worth a spice all in itself rofl

Agreed, needs to be in funny pics!

Had to use it, it was a great episode & I can remember how much I laughed when I first saw it

Is this topic resolved? Did you decide on what to do?

1 Spice up

sorry i was ill but yes its resolved, as we ordered the server from a company we asked them for more ram and they gave us 16/32gb rdimm sticks so now one node is 512 and the other is 768
