I’m seeing issues with a domain joined Surface pro 3. I am seeing the units “Hang” at wake up/boot
1- occasionally, the unit goes to hibernate, and when you hit the “Window” button, it vibrates but nothing comes up on the screen. a hard boot so far is the only thing that seems to resolve this condition.
2- The the keyboard is attached, and the unit is off, it is placed in the docking station and the user trys to boot it. The “Surface” logo appears but it never gets any farther than that. Shutting it off and removing the keyboard and replacing the in the docking station resolves this. Additionally, you can replace the keyboard at this point (after it boots) and it works fine.
I have not yet done any real troubleshooting but I am curious if anyone else has run into this and if they have found a resolution?
Also interested in any other challenges IT had had in supporting these devices.

You’re not alone. I’ve been seeing it too. Although I don’t use the Windows key, I sometimes have to press the power button twice in the morning after placing it in the docking station.
The first troubleshooting step I did was to make sure all the updates were applied. Things got better after some firmware installed. My next step is to check advanced power settings but I think having the keyboard attached in the dock has more to do with it than anything else.
Other people have been removing the keyboard or turning it on with the keyboard down then closing it at bootup.
The Surfaces has been great for us. The docking stations have been the biggest problems. We’ve had a 63% failure rate (7 of 11) with the display ports on the docking stations. Unfortunately, they’re needed.

Well, dealing with Docking stations has always been a bit of a support generator; I think back to older Dell laptops and how they would perform in a docking station environment. I would hope that someday we will not have to deal with this but I will not hold my breath. Moving forward, I’ll verify the updates and firmware and hope the executive that has this until will be able to work with the challenges… 63% uh? not good.
I’ll post more if I see any additional support generators.

we are considering Pro 3’s next year but if the docking station has a 63% fail rate, that is not acceptable. I wonder if other companies have that high of a failure rate?

I’m hoping it’s a bad batch.
The one’s that failed (with one exception so far) were DOA on the Display Port. For the one that failed after, MS is replacing it and did so without an inquisition or for asking for the bad one back.
The 63% is 7 of 11 but purchased at different times between August (when dock became available) and September.

I’m starting to think #2 is with the docking station. Curiosity has me paying extra attention to my actions.
I have a docks in different buildings. At the main one, I sometimes have to press the power button twice to get the logon screen to appear on the monitor. At the other, 1 press is all it takes.
Same model/brand monitor, same model/brand keyboard, same Belkin adapter, same routine…cover on, place in dock, close the sides, make sure the light comes on, press power button…# of presses depends where I am.
FYI, just got a Surface Pro 3 with dock. The network, display port worked fine on the dock, issue was all USB ports did not. Microsoft sent a replacement dock. Same issue. Thinking it must be something the way we setup the Surface on our domain as it’s weird that 2 docks would have all USB ports DOA… but, reading this post has me thinking maybe we got a bad batch as well. The USB port on the Surface itself works fine. Did notice something with the dock network port, sometimes after docking, to get the network port to work, had to unplug and plug back in the power to the dock. Weird.

I have one that boots but after login it goes to a black screen with a mouse pointer. Nothing else. I am doing a refresh now. It seems like that is the standard answer (refresh) with these things. How lame. I narrowed it down to windows explorer not starting correctly

Well, the fresh worked and it works good now.
Not the way I would want to do fix the problem though. I had to reinstall all of the software that we installed previously.

How about this issue. I have one right now on domain and while wireless there are no issues. When plugged into the wall on the dock no network resources can be accessed but she can get to the internet and operate just fine.

sounds like wired LAN adapter has some different settings.
we’ve got about 8 or 9 of these and they have been good but, one issue that seems consistant
with them is doing a reboot while in the docking station has them freeze during the process and requires a hard boot
to get them going again. Not a huge deal if you are sitting in front of the unit but remote updates
and so fothr that require a reboot are frustrating.
they are all domain-joined units running 8.1
anyone else see this ?
thx.
