Hi Everyone,

One of our clients is engaging with a Chinese firm and they’d like to have regular online meetings. The Chinese firm can’t use meeting software like MS Teams or Zoom because of local restrictions.

They are suggesting the use of VooV and Tencent Meeting. Because both are owned by Tencent, some have suggested that they are a State Sponsored organisation so this makes them a potential security risk.

Has anyone had experience with this software and have any suggestions on what to look out for and what protections to put in place (if any), to cater for this software? Is it even OK to run in your environment?

Any suggestions greatly welcomed.

Thanks

Duke

Is that someone invested in the current “USA vs China” (trade) war ?
If someone in USA own shares in a listed company and also works in the government, is that company “state sponsored” and thus a “potential security risk” ? Then after 2008, aint literally all USA banks “state sponsored” ?

If you are that worried, use a old lappy and remove all data & files. Link the lappy to your guest network or directly to DNZ or use a LTE mobile hot spot for the meetings ?

Hi Adrian,

Agreed that it seems I’m being overly suspicious and buying into the rhetoric. But it’s never a bad thing to ask. No one is ever all knowledgeable about all things IT and someone seeing this post may bring something to the table that I didn’t think about, which is what I was hoping for.

I, like you, was thinking of isolating a machine they could use which is probably the most logical way to approach this.

Thanks

Duke

We also have Global outreach so like POTUS, we have “red lappy” (in stead of red phones) which are older lappy (those about to be disposed) and only have the apps installed and linked directlt to DMZ or guest wifi. Sadly only main option.
Then files are shared or uploaded via Gmail account on the Chrome browser.
