Looks like anyone who got a new 12th Gen Intel Laptop for the Bar Exam is kicking themselves right now.

Soo… that’s a mess.

Requirements:

“Windows laptops new enough that they offer Windows 10 or 11, but old enough not to come with the new Intel processors.”

Edit: I thought this bit was interesting also,

“Both 11th and 12th Gen Intel processors nixed support for SGX (software guard extension), which makes it difficult if not impossible to play Blu-rays in 4K on newer devices. As BleepingComputer explains, Blu-rays need SGX for digital rights management (DRM) processing in order to play in 4K.”

Not that I think Blue Ray is a huge deal, but it still surprised me.

It’s an odd quirk.

It’s from The Verge though, so… take the sensationalist item with a grain of salt.

And we’ll soon not have an option to buy 11th gen and older through Dell and yet our Director of Infrastructure still doesn’t think it’s a big deal that we be prepared for this…

Thankfully the 5430 I’ve been testing seems to be compatible with most of our standard workloads, even if it is slower than our 5420s on Windows 10 (of course we don’t even have a plan for when to start looking at Windows 11 yet, because why would we need to look at the future in IT?

Upset at the director for something? No, why do you ask? haha

Somebody should sue them! LOL

I’ll keep my 1st gen laptop thank you very much. lol

I’ll take it with a bit of a grain of salt - The Verge tends to be a bit clickbaity for my taste (and if their “how to build a PC” guide is any indication, they don’t know a ton about what they’re covering, at least when it comes to PC hardware). Still, it’s a bit of a surprising oversight on both parties, especially given how restrictive the software is in terms of what it could be run on. I presume laptops with newer AMD chips don’t run into this issue?

Didn’t even notice that bit for Blu-Rays, thanks for pointing it out. I still buy all my movies on blu-ray and rip back ups to a Plex media server, I’ll make sure I stick with AMD’s Ryzen platform and stay away from Intel whenever I upgrade my PC.

A bit unrelated but this is why DRM is so hated. Yes, I understand why it exists and it is completely understandable that a company wants to protect their product from piracy but most DRM is not very effective at doing what it’s designed for. All it does is punish the people who actually purchase the product while the pirates bypass it and go on their merry way.

Oh yeah, I tend to take the Verge not so seriously… but this STILL had me facepalming.

I am glad @ich-ni-san brought that SGX info up… I am not too far from building a new Plex machine… so AMD it is.

I’ve never chased latest gen processors for enterprise servers, corp desk/laptops or systems at home.

I’ve got a couple of 2011 Intel-based Mac Mini’s
2015 Intel M3 12" MacBook
10th gen 2020 13" MBP
11th HP x360 Chromebook
M1 Air Base (for the missus)
M1 Studio Pro Base

Good job Intel. This also reminds me of all those old government websites that still require Internet Exploder to work. It’s almost like there are lazy developers along with Intel Trying to (Apple, Google) the world by EOLing oldish Processes/software.

Jokes aside, we could also approach this similar to how we handled the NPAPI madness a few years back. Did it break a bunch of sites? Absolutely… but it was less of “My browser isn’t compatible” and more “this site needs to update”

I’m only playing devil’s advocate though because I have a 12700K :joy:

Verbatim.

I have the same mb, same case, slightly lower rated power. (750W). Same cooler (I think) - though I mounted 3 fans on mine.

The case is a chinese brand - and i love it.

The moral of the story is, stick with AMD.

That video is still so wrong and cringeworthy today.

I hate this phrase so completely but am now faced with a situation that it actually fits “first world problem”

Isn’t that saying usually reserved for trivial “Karen” issues?

I was thinking “First World ELITE Problem”

Stefan doesn’t work for The Verge anymore, but to this day, he gets trolled on his Twitter, for that thermal paste application.
