Just installed the RC, but it won’t connect to several switches or SNMP devices I’ve tried, including Netgear, Ubiquiti Toughswitch, Temperature@lert, Cisco or Ubiquiti APs. It randomly decided to connect to 2 Netgear switches, but won’t connect to others. Gives an “unable to connect within 20 seconds” error.

2 Spice ups

Hey James,

Can you snmpwalk those switches successfully?

Lesson in checking configs before posting…some of the devices I tried didn’t have SNMP enabled! Fixed that.

Netgear: 3 GS748TS switches: #1 added, reports I/O but not Packets. #2 gets added, but is “busy” and doesn’t show data. #3 still has unable to connect error. A GS724Tv3 and a GSM7328FS were added successfully.

Ubiquiti Toughswitch Pro: I can walk it successfully, but it doesn’t add.

Temperature device: turns out its trap only, not walk capable.

Cisco 1130AG AP: a walk produces only “End of MIB”, gets added to monitor but is “busy”.

Ubiquiti Unifi: supposedly they support v1 but I was unable to walk.

If I shoot you a link to a new build, can you install it and see if you get packet data from the netgear? I’d like to get the logs/snmpwalk from that Toughswitch and the Cisco still…

Sure thing, Ezra, glad to help.

The Cisco log literally just says “End of MIB”. A manual snmpwalk forcing -v 2c returns “iso.3.6.1.2.1 = No more variables left in this MIB View (It is past the end of the MIB tree)”

If you are also using the normal Spiceworks (for ticketing and inventory) do the switches import using SNMP in that case ? This is probably not the case since you didn’t have SNMP on in the first place, but I thought I would still ask.

1 Spice up

JamesDB, sent you a link to a build. I’ll take a look at the ubuquiti now. What model/sw is that Cisco?

They only are recognized & scanned by Spiceworks if 1) I add the spiceworks’ server IP to the switch’s not-trap-related SNMP settings, and 2) in Spiceworks I manually specify a SNMP v2c account to scan with (community: public), the default public SNMP scan doesn’t work. We have a SonicWall so I have Nmap scanning disabled, FYI.

I’m now running the 0.9.63 build you sent me – has the RC2 0.9.66 build superseded this?

The Netgears now all add & display I/O stats, but still no packet info. The Toughswitch cannot be added.

Cisco AP
Model: AIR-AP1131AG-A-K9
Firmware: 12.3(8)JEA

Since installing SWNM I’ve discovered a link between my core switch and an edge has some consistent packet drop; something to look in to!

Are sure your “public” account isn’t only SNMP v1 ? I have mine using a read-only SNMP v2 password and Spiceworks sucks them in. Once in a while I have a straggler that I manually scan in but it does take it. I preface this ALL by saying I am NOT an SNMP expert I only know enough that I know mine in working. Sorry I can’t help you more. Maybe someone from Spiceworks or someone else can help more.

Since Spiceworks tells you they scan the “public” community I had never added a v2 account until testing now. Why would Spiceworks not scan public using v2 by default as well as v1? Seems odd.

I’m looking into why the packet info isn’t rendering for some people. Can you send me your newest set of logs when you get time? That Toughswitch should be addable…

I assume you mean snmpwalk?

I’m looking for the logs generated by the network monitor (using the tray icon to gen the zip file is easiest). .66 and the build I sent are really close; I’d hold off on an upgrade until we’ve made more progress on this switch issue.

PM’d you

Got it. I’ll look later this morning.
