One of my VM’s is currently running out of space. It is running on Windows Server 2016 Standard. I have 120 GB allocated to it. I extended the disk in the Hyper-V host and added an extra 180 GB. I see the space in disk management as Unallocated but when I click on the C: volume and try to extend it the option is grayed out. The disk is basic and partition style is GPT. (This is a VHDX).

Any checkpoints on the disk?

Has the space been added to the same disk or did you add another disk?

The disk has 1 checkpoint. The space was added to the same disk.

I believe you need to remove the checkpoint, the disk is locked until then

Merge the checkpoint back in and then you should be able to extend the partition. Hyper-V checkpoints aren’t a true backup but rather a partial backup that Hyper-V uses to access files older than the checkpoint date.

The checkpoint was deleted but the option to extend is still grayed out.

Can we see a screenshot

Because your space is not adjacent you cant do this.

That 450Mb partition needs to go or you need to make a second partition to use for storage

I deleted the 450Mb partition and that did the trick!

Rod is right, you can extend the 450MB area because the 180GB area is to the right. You cannot expand C: because there is no empty space to the right of it.

As the 450MB area is a recovery partition I would suggest deleting it. You’ll then be able to expand C:

Always make sure that you’ve got good, valid, tested backups.

Thanks Gary.

I am curious…

  • How did you have a 450 MB Recovery partition at the end?

  • Which OS?

  • Would it not have been possible to move that 450M to the end and then extend the volume?
