I inherited a network that consists of a Sonicwall TZ300 with a couple sonicpoints in our main building with two VLANs being used.
ID 5 for Private, ID 10 for public
We also have a bunch of ubiquiti APs all over the place, none of them actually had access to our network because the previous MSP couldn’t be bothered I guess.
I added some APs with a network expansion and added some HP managed POE switches in as well.
I can’t get these damn things to get on our vlans. When I try to connect to one of the APs it just spins forever and never gives me a real IP(only 169.x.x.x)
My wired network is 192.168.0.x , Sonicpoints are on 192.168.10.x(no idea why) and my private wireless is on 192.168.15.x
Anyone have any guides on how they made their ubiquiti APs link up and play nice with the sonicwall so I can get them to use DHCP and link with the network?

Personally, I wouldn’t use DHCP for APs. I would simply statically assign them and make sure the ports are tagged properly. Should work fine.

DHCP for the clients connecting to the APs. The APs are static.

Figured it out. These APs wont work with vlans unless you use their shitty switches too. and I’m not about to trade in a bunch of HP switches with lifetime warranty for some jenky ass ubiquiti switch just so i can get vlans.

Unifi Controller, Settings, Wireless Networks, edit your defined wireless network(s), Advanced Options, Vlan settings.

Not true, i’ve done it zillion times.
If you’re talking about passive POE that’s a different story, but vlan protocols are same and do a same function on every switch. New AC support AF/AT for poe too soo…

I get that, I configured the vlan. It doesn’t allow data to flow when it has a vlan configured yet when I disable the vlan it works.
I’m not talking about POE, if you have the PRO ap btw it uses a normal POE protocol and does work with any switch FYI.
I would think that vlan protocol would just pass through but their documentation says that vlans are only supported when using their switches.

Straight from datashet:
"PoE Standards
The UniFi AC EDU, Pro, and Outdoor APs
are compatible with an 802.3at PoE+ compliant switch,
while the UniFi AC Pro AP can also use 802.3af PoE."

Which is what I just said…

What does POE have to do with this thread?
Interesting about Vlans only being supported with their switches. I thought for sure I tested that before.

Thats what I’m confused about too… POE should not have anything to do with the discussion at all but it was brought up for some reason.
But yes, I thought it was weird. In the technical requirements for the project to my provider I specifically said these must support vlan and no I’m not buying their switches. I like having a lifetime warranty with HP switches. He said they would work.
But according to docs and testing it appears the vlan function only works with their switches. If there is a way to do it without their switches then I’d love to see it. So far I’ve been unsuccessful doing it though.

Is mngmnt vlan not going through or is the other wireless vlan you created not going through… or both

Wireless doesn’t pass through. management I’ve left on standard 192.168.0.x network. I haven’t changed anything there until I know this all works.

Usual setup for vlan trunking.
I’ve just used this model the other day with client’s sonny-erricson switches.

So in your case management is probably vlan1 - so leave that be and setup trunking for other vlans. Your sonicwall will provide the dhcp for your clients as well I presume.

Yeah that is definitely not the case, they work fine with other brands of switches, we’ve done it many times.
You said you configured the VLAN but unable to get an IP, as a test- if you assign a static IP in the correct subnet can the client communicate? If not it is likely an issue with your switch (tagging/untagging) or router config, if they can communicate with a static IP then you probably just need to setup an IP-Helper or a DHCP server on that VLAN.

I presently have UAP-AC-Pro’s connected on my network with Fortigate firewall and HP Procurve switches. VLAN’s galore, and it all works just fine. Scratch that, it all works WONDERFULLY.
What device is doing the routing between your VLAN’s? The SonicWall, or the switches? Are you SURE the routing is working?
Question: What device is doing DHCP?
It sounds like your client device and DHCP server are not talking through the VLAN as it is presently configured. gb5102 probably just gave you the solution by mentioning the need for IP Helper settings, or DHCP for the particular VLAN.
I would suggest setting a port on your HP Procurve untagged for the VLAN you want your wireless clients to use, then plug a PC to it. Does that PC pick up an IP from the DHCP server? If not, fix that, then add the AP’s into the mix.
I would also suggest holding off cursing gear you are not familiar with while asking for help with it…tends to make those who know and love the gear less interested in helping, and the SpiceWorks community has LOTS of Ubiquiti fans (myself included).

Throwing this out there as well, I have been using Ubituity AP’s on my NetGear switches and I just recently setup a VLAN with them. Works great.

OP you mention using a sonicwall as the router. Sonicwall has a setting that I believe is on by default that will not allow any wireless AP to exist on a VLAN unless it is a sonicpoint. They sell this as a security feature to prevent rogue access points. (or anything that isn’t theirs) from working on your network. you have to turn this off before your Ubiquiti APs will be able to function. I believe it was in the Zone setup options on the sonicwall.

I think what Pictuelle was getting at with the POE is that unless the Ubiquiti AP’s you are using are the PRO models then they will not work with the POE on your switches. The none PRO models use an different POE standard that 90% of switches including HP don’t support.
If you Ubiquiti APs are all PRO models this isn’t a concern for you.
You don’t mention what model APs you are using
