I have a unifi network unifi gateway, switch and 3 aps for 6 users

They have the controller on a laptop that is going south and not worth repairing rather then putting it on another machine I was wanting to know if anyone has put it in the cloud and if so what did you do to get it setup there?

I saw the cloud controller you plug into the network but dont really want to spend any more money if they can get away with it

I hate the term “cloud” controller for their onsite controller widget. The only thing cloud about it is you log into Ubiquiti’s web portal and it creates a tunnel down to the device. It’s not running in the “cloud”.

Unless you want statistics collection or use the built-in captive portal for wifi, you only need to run it when making changes or upgrading firmware so you can put it anywhere.

If you want it running offsite, you can purchase a cheap hosted linux instance and install it there. You’re still going to be paying.

I’m sure someone will be along to recommend such a cloud provider.

Ok that is what i thought. If I want to put the software controller in the cloud I would have to purchase a amazon or azure space and spin up a vm load windows or linux and run it like that …yes it will cost to do that.

Might as well just get the cloud controller key would that be the same thing I am trying to accomplish?

Either way will work. I know there are some linux hosts that people recommend for the controller that’s only a few dollars a month. Azure/AWS will be much more than that.

Should note that of you go down the road of hosting the controller in the cloud, there are a number of ports you have to open in your firewall. That’s something I’m not comfortable doing for something like this.

Really good point looks liike may need to keep it local.

Thanks again for the viewpoints

There is an option have a true cloud controller with ubiquiti

https://community.ui.com/questions/Announcing-UniFis-newest-Cloud-management-offering/075cb7a8-1c45-4987-9776-616bbad8969e But one year of hosting costs about the same as buying a cloud key and putting it on prem

You could also buy a raspberry pi and there are a number of how to’s out there to build a controller and have it onsite with minimal resources and cost.

You can put the controller in a public cloud quite cheaply. Now you will have to open a few ports, but you just restrict them to the cloud server’s specific IP.
