Small Home office is anyone using either of these devices if so what is your take on them good bad ?

User has 5GB internet speed did not know need to get matching network equipment

Cloud Gateway Fiber

UCG-Fiber (30W)

Flex 10 GbE

USW-Flex-XG

I’d probably go the extra mile and get a Dream Machine Pro

If he wants to use POE devices, the UDM Special Edition has POE built in.
But that only is of use if he can connect it directly of course

The Cloud Gateway and the Switch aren’t bad either though

I just clicked on the links and started imagining what I could do with that at home… only to realize I don’t need that at home. Does that make me an addict?

Dream Machine doesn’t have multiple multi-gig ports.

If the user wants wired download speeds to cap out at what their Internet service is capable of (5 Gbps - not GB), they need switching that can support it.

So yes, you could use a Dream Machine, but you’d still need a 10 Gb switch to connect other wired clients to get that 5Gbps download speed.

I would go with what @WarKraft suggested. Those seem most appropriate.

Realizing you don’t need it definitely makes you NOT an addict.

If you saw it and immediately decided you can’t live without it, and would sell your firstborn to get it… Then you might be an addict.

Oh damn you are right.

It’s always the same with unifi. I see those shiny things and wanna go a step further because that stuff is so freaking cool, but they really do lack some 2.5G/5G ports on those.

Those will work fine, although $300 for a 5port switch seems on the excessive side, when it offers no real benefit over a competitor model IMO.

If costs isn’t an issue, then grab that for a cleaner desk aesthetic, assuming it’s not going in a cab and won’t matter what it looks like.

Unifi is like comparing Dewalt to Makita etc, you choose a colour and generally stick to it. Some people love Unifi, others Meraki. Ruijii or however it’s spelt is the recent up and comer that’s also worth consideration.

The dream machine pro can only process wan at 3.5GBS Still not slow, but not fast enough for a 5GB WAN Link

If Rack mount is desired the Dream Machine Max would be needed for 5GB WAN

3 Spice ups

who else has a managed 5 port switch with 10GB LAN for under $300? LOL I want to know

4 Spice ups

The 3.5 Gbps is only if you activate IPS
IPS always hits hard on speed

Unifi has the aggregation Switch

I used that with SFP+ Modules to have 8 port 10gbps switches for 240€ (yeah, the SFP+ Modules cost money, too.)

I have Dewalt, Makita, and Milwaukee tools in my shop. Meraki and HP switches at work. Are you saying that not everyone mixes and matches?

We use a bunch of the old xps 16 switches at work I imagine using these at home would rock and in my opinion ubiquiti is just killing it with value to cost equipment. I’m a huge fan of their business model at this point.

3 Spice ups

True, but you should have IPS active

you don’t disable seat belts, airbags and brakes to make your car go slightly faster

4 Spice ups

Well, yeah, but for private use?
I don’t know

The Cloud Gateway Fiber doesn’t have IPS at all

2 Spice ups

if its attached to the internet its not private.

4 Spice ups

unless we are talking about different devices it does have IPS

2 Spice ups

I don’t have either of those specifically. I have a cloud gateway ultra which is the lower speed version gateway.

Is the ISP connection actually fiber? Like a direct internet access (ethernet fiber)?
Or is it a GPON/broadband delivery which typically then covert to copper ethernet via an ISP supplied ONT?

In either case it is highly unlikely they will ever need to the 5Gbps throughput. So potentially a 1gig version would suffice. They would need a 10gig LAN PC to make use of the 5Gbps or they will be limited to 2.5

Wait what, really?

That particular product lineup doesn’t make any sense imho. Why is the Cloud gateway so much cheaper when it actually is better.

Well, I stand corrected.

2 Spice ups

no clue LOL… maybe they plan to sell more of this model and got a better volume discount?

3 Spice ups

All true, but this has been a trend I am seeing more and more the last year. I haven’t seen 5GB WAN yet, but lots of 3GB WAN (Fiber) popping up in my area for about $120 month. The ISP pushes how fast it is while completely ignoring that people have a 1GB LAN internally in most cases and that most devices are Wifi.

I pushed my ISP on what the benefits are and the best they could give me is it will make my Netflix faster and I need it for 4K (which is all BS LOL).

But if you can get it, understand the networking requirements and are willing to upgrade :man_shrugging: your LAN why not I Guess.
