I’m having a hell of a time trying to get Unitrends EB to work properly. First off, it’s setup really funky at the moment because I don’t have a lot of options.

I have a NAS, that is currently in use by Symantec Backup Exec 2012. I cannot clear it for use with UEB until I have additional backups, so I purchased a 5tb external to temporarily run backups to until I have a few, at which point I’ll wipe the NAS and setup UEB to it properly.

So the 5tb external is connected to UEB as NFS storage, and it’s slow, but seems to be partially working. Problem is that of the two backups of one server I have done so far, both have failed for reasons I am not sure of. I called support, and the answer was that because I hadn’t registered the product yet, that’s probably why it was failing. He didn’t look at logs I have, or ask me what the error was, just said that was likely the cause. Because backups take so long though (12+ hours for our smaller server), I would really like to make sure that’s the issue so I know before I waste another day or two trying to bang my head against the wall. I have since registered the product and put the license in.

The backup is getting all the data, but then failing at the very end (hence saying the backup can be restored from, but to do so with caution)…I have posted the log file to pastebin here: UEB Fail - Pastebin.com
Line 77 I believe is where issues begin. I can post the other log as well if needed, but it looks almost identical to this one.

Any other information needed? Let me know and I’ll post it up ASAP.

Zachary - I’m sorry that you’re having these issues. Can you tell me what kind of UEB license you have (Spiceworks or Enterprise Edition? If Enterprise, is it licensed by TB or by protected resource)?

I have an Enterprise License. The license was not entered on the first two backups though, but I figured even without a trial or actual license that the software would work. If that’s not the case, that’s fine, just want to make sure I’m not spending that much time trying this again if it’s not going to work again

Zachary - Since the word “Enterprise” is in the name of the product, having a license called Enterprise can be confusing. Is this a paid Enterprise license, or a free version of some sort? To make it easier, I can figure this out for you. You’ll just need to send me your asset tag number via Spiceworks private message.

It is a paid version, I can send you the asset tag and the feature string momentarily if that helps.

Zachary - That would be great. I’m asking these questions because if you have a per protected TB license, you can add as many different clients as you’d like, however, if you have a per resource license, you are limited to the number and type of clients that your licensed for.

When you say backups are slow, what kind of speeds are you getting?

That I’m not entirely sure of. I let the sales guy know exactly what I have, so if the license reflects that, I should be able to backup up to 10 VM’s, and 2 physical servers. I have 1 socket in each VM host server, so I purchased a license for each, plus the addition of both physical servers, and tech support.

Lol, do you really want to know?

The problem is the target, that I’m sure of, but we’re talking maybe 4MB/s if only one backup is running. Right now my larger server is backing up as well, which is about 700Gb, and the our smaller 200Gb server is also backing up, so I’m sitting pretty at about 1.5-2MB/s. Cookin with gasoline right now!

Zachary - Thanks for confirming about the licensing. I like to start there since that can sometimes be the root of the issue. It would be great if you can register your product, but that shouldn’t prevent you from performing a backup. Did you follow the steps outlined in this video to expand storage?

Yeah, that’s pretty bad. The agent maxes out for most people at around 20MB/s so you’re right, there’s definitely something going on there.

When I added the storage, I had quite a few issues getting it to work properly.
I ended up going in to add storage in the web client, Add Backup Storage, and then Create a separate storage area for an alternate backup device. I then added the backup as a NAS storage device under the NFS protocol.

I tried originally setting the extra storage up as the way the video described, but ran into issues where the error was “Unknown error” each time. Eventually gave up on that because this is temporary anyways and my Symantec backups were failing, so I had to get something going and was getting desperate.

Zachary - The method described in the video tutorial is our best practice. I think that we need to get you on the phone with support ASAP to determine why this was failing, so that you can get your backups up and running. Would you like for me to have someone from support call you?

I am going to attempt to add the storage one more time first by adding the External to the datastore, then adding the additional hard drive to the disk. This will force me to cancel my existing backups, but if they go faster afterwords, it will end up being worth it.

If I can’t get it to go within the hour here, I will post back and see if you can get someone on the horn with me.

Thank you for all your help!

Zachary - Happy to be of assistance. Please let us know how we can help you resolve this.

Unfortunately the same thing that happened last time happened again this time.

I set up the external drive as a datastore, added the hard drive (though I could not save it with the VM, because the VM is on an internal datastore, so I saved it on the external datastore). Rebooted the VM, opened storage and went to expand the storage, and it basically just sits and spins. I sat and watched it for 30 minutes, and eventually it said that my session expired. It brings me back to the login page, at which point the Expand storage window pops up again (some sort of glitch) but only displays the storage that was originally on the device, not the additional storage I was trying to add. I then attempt to login, but get an error stating that there was a problem accessing the database during authentication.

When it happened the last time and I called in, the tech said that he had to unmount and remount the datastore (/backups) in order to get it to start responding again, but the added storage, which showed after he did that, could not be added to backup devices.

Stuck…and frustrated.

Zachary - Would you mind if I initiated a support call for you?
