Unitrends & Storage Network

Hi Everyone,

I have a fairly typical setup with a few VM hosts and am using NAS storage for the VMs. I have 1Gbps connection for the VM’s which the general office network. On the back end I have a 10Gbps network to carry the VM disk traffic and a few other things. When using the Unitrends physical appliance if I also put the Unitrends on the 10Gbps storage network will it be able to take advantage of that when backing up the VMs or will it use the general office 1Gbps connection? In an ideal world I would hope it would go directly to the NAS on the 10Gb network but maybe Unitrends doesn’t work like that? Sorry if I left out any important details.

It cannot go directly to the NAS. It has to backup from snapshots taken by VMware. It needs VMware to do the data translation for it, what is on the NAS is not ready for you to utilize. So sadly, it can’t work the way that you are hoping.

What you are wanting to do is like saying you want to backup a Windows server by talking directly to the disk rather than to the server. Sounds great but the disk is raw data and you need the server to give you locked files, ready the file system, etc.

Adam - Thanks for using Unitrends. SAM has given you some great advice, but you may want to speak with one of our engineers to configure your Unitrends appliance. Is your appliance already in your environment, or are you trying to figure out how Unitrends might fit into your environment?

Adam - Congrats on your new appliance! The tech that did your install should have been able to answer this for you today, and if not, should have promised to get someone in touch to answer this question. Can you forward me your asset tag number or installation case number so that I can get someone on this for you?

Unitrends is horrible. I would stay away from them as best you can. Their support is SEVERELY LACKING. Only one or two people who actually know what they are talking about. And now they keep making stupid software changes. Stay away. Use Veem for virtual and any one else for physical.

Andrew - It sounds like you had an exceptionally bad experience with Unitrends, which we hate to hear. Do you mind private messaging me your asset tag number or a case number so that I can look into what has happened to date with your appliance?
