Hello,

I was wondering if you can backup Exchange and SQL databases properly with the free edition of Unitrends? The product mentions a limitation of vm’s able to be backed up, but I’m unable to determine if it can’t backup database type servers and flush logs, etc that are required.

Matt - Thanks for asking this question! You can protect any VM running either VMware or Hyper-V with our free edition. Unfortunately, our free edition is not application aware, so you will not be able to restore transaction logs, etc. If you need this functionality, you may want to use our NFR edition , which is free to all Spiceworks users with the code “SpicyUEB”. This version includes protection for 2 virtual sockets + 2 application servers (these can be virtual or physical) + 1 year of support. You can renew this annually, so long as you’re still a Spicehead.

Please let me know what questions you may have.

Katie answered it, the answer is “No”.

But the NFS edition will do one Exchange and one SQL for you.

Honestly, if you are running Exchange and need a free backup product, that should probably tell you that that portion should be hosted.

I just want to verify this, after the 1 year you say we can renew this. But to renew is that at a yearly cost or do we get another Spiceworks code?

Thanks Katie.

Still free, just needs to be manually renewed. It’s because non-Spiceheads who use the NFR version have to renew their certification to maintain it.

I’m going to give it a try. Installing now, did find out you have to install it on a Physical PC with Hyper-V Installed. Then will test and see if it works for me.

Thanks again all!

Well after a long pause at the end of the installation it finished. But when I opened my Hyper-V Manager I didn’t see a new VM Unitrends says will be there, and just in case I also looked for any new Icons to click on but none are there. I did however find the VHD in Program Files. So I decided to attach it to a new manually created VM, well now it says the file is being used and wont start the VM. So my thoughts are to copy it to a new file name and try it again thinking this will release the newly copied file. If that doesn’t work I will shut down and reboot my Hyper-V Host.

Making a copy worked, so I rebooted my Hyper-V Server and the original File worked as well. Problem Solved.

SAM - Thanks for jumping on on this post to confirm that the NFR edition can be renewed for free using the “SpicyUEB” code while i was out on vacation!

Mike - I’m glad that you were able to get your UEB up & running, and complete a restore. Please let me know what other questions you may have as you move forward.
