Hello I am 30 years old and in my third IT job, I have worked as Help desk, second line and now in a role of a bit of both mixed with some third line work. I hope to be in this role for a while but feel maybe I should be working towards what I want to do in my next role now, however I’m not sure what a good role to work towards would be.

Would anyone be able to give suggestions as to what might be a good career move down the line and what I should start working towards?

Many thanks.

That’s hard to say. You could go the route of becoming a Systems Administrator or get into Network Security.

What are your interests? Do you have any certifications?

If you are currently employed, a good question to ask yourself is: What would be best for the company? They might be willing to support your growth through paying for training and certifications which would further you along a career path.

What you are interested in and/or what you are good at are pretty important. No idea how to recommend something without some direction.

Agreed with the above. Figure out what you’re interested in and go from there and find a way from your current employer for assistance if you need it.

Learn about business processes and. These are applicable no matter where you find yourself in your career. IT Technical work is great, but when IT adds value to a business that’s when things can really start to happen for you. Think about making yourself indispensable to your company. If you can help the company achieve its goals (and revenue) then you are really doing your job right.

Good luck.

What you need to do is pick a destination, then we can help you plan for the trip.

There are many facets to IT, pick some that interest you and head in those directions. If you find that some overlap (inevitably many of them might in one way or another) then pick those and we can point you in the right direction…

Hello,

Thanks for responses, I’m not sure what area would interest me significantly in IT, I have a CCNA qualification but alot of that has been forgotten as I don’t use it on a regular basis. I like the idea of network security but I don’t have any experience in that area.

Many thanks.

What are the parts of IT that interest you? Not that it matters, youre an Arsenal Support…

To be honest in not sure, I found the CCNA course interesting and i enjoy programming when i can just muck about with my own projects buy they aren’t really work areas i have much experience. Up the gunners.

Edward83,

There is a CCNA Security certification you can pursue, but you can also start with the Security+ to get a good basis on security topics. You may also want to check out the SSCP and CISSP.

I recently graduated with a BS in Cyber Security, but I still feel like I have only touched the tip of the iceberg. I would look into these concepts, see what you are most interested in (Computer Forensics, Risk Management, etc) and then look into job descriptions to see what you need and what you may enjoy doing.
