How does the new ups widget recognize ups’s on the system?

so far it recognizes the one off my pc, but not anything else. I’ve connected a training pc to the same model via usb, even installed the accompanying software, no dice.

Would be nice to be able to see all ups’s in the building and see when they are in trouble. Just need to know what to do to get them seen.

The UPS Supervisor widget should show any UPS devices that appear in the UPS group in the Inventory that were created by scans.

It sounds like you may be having some scan issues. A couple questions for you:

  1. How are these UPSes being scanned? Are they connected to Windows, Mac, or Linux machines? Which version of the OS?
  2. What manufacturer and model are the UPSes in question?
  3. Is any UPS software installed on the machines they are connected to?

Spiceworks will find (most) UPS devices that are connected via USB cable, and that are recognized by Microsoft Power Center. Check your Power Options under the Control Panel. You should see a tab for your UPS there if the Power Center recognizes it.

The serial cable that comes with the UPS (if provided) will only work with the accompanying software. Powerchute being an example. Spiceworks has had some problems with Powerchute, not sure if that has been resolved. Powerchute seems to shut down the Power Center’s UPS recognition feature.

Spiceworks detection of a connected UPS will not be automatic. You will either have to wait for the complete scans to cycle through all your systems, or initial a manual scan on the systems with a UPS to get them recognized. After that, no problems. Likewise, if you have a UPS connected via a NIC, make sure you include the IP address for those units in your scanning range.

One last thing that Spiceworks is still working on, is servers. UPS devices connected via USB cables to servers are not recognized, even though the Power Center in the Control Panel shows the device connected and working properly. Something to do with the server role, my guess. Likely related to the same issue with the Security Center not properly recognizing some AV programs running on servers.

they are cyberpower 850avr models connected to windows 7 pro OS’s

i only have 2 connected so far, mine shows up fine, the training pc we have i have it connected via usb and even downloaded and installed the ups software from cyberpower on it. Thanks. Not sure where to check for any scan errors on ups’s

just different plans and advanced options in windows 7 pro for power control panel options. I even looked on mine that is being recognized, and when it’s recognized as ups, it shows in spiceworks as my pc under the ups category with my pc info, ram, warranty, config, etc… I’ll try running a manual scan on the other pc and post back results, any other thoughts? How does it recognize a ups in a scan in spiceworks? what criteria is that category looking for?

For Windows 7, you can find the UPS devices under the Control Panel in the Devices and Printers section. They moved it. :slight_smile: You should see your UPS device there, and can double-click to get detailed info.

When the scan is performed, we look to see if “UPS” or “Uninterruptible Power Supply” appear in the name, model, or manufacturer columns of the Win32_Battery table.

You can easily see the data we are checking by running the following command from the command prompt “wmic path Win32_Battery get”. If “UPS” or “Uninterruptible Power Supply” don’t appear, then we currently won’t detect it as a UPS.

Is there any chance you will support Network connected UPS devices? I have a few Riello 15KVA UPS’s I’d love to monitor through Spiceworks…

I have 3 HP R/T3000NL UPS that are connected using AF401A HP Management Modules to a mix of WIN 2003 / VMWARE servers. Spiceworks doesn’t seem to recognize them. I’m scanning them as SNMP devices. Should they be recognized?

We definitely support networked UPSes. Most of our testing with networked UPSes was with Eaton, APC, and Tripp Lite devices. It sounds like the device you’re using deviates a bit from the standard MIB.

If you can get an SNMP walk of one of the devices having the problem I can create a defect for the dev so he can likely add support. Here are directions for performing the SNMP walk http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/2126 . If you’ll PM me the results I’ll get a defect in for it.

I too use HP UPS’s for my servers. Specifically the HP R3000 XR series with the AF401A HP Management Module. They are not being detected correctly in SpiceWorks as UPS’s. I would be happy to send an SNMP walk log to you if it would help get them added.

I did submit the snmpwalw to Justin but I haven’t heard back yet.

I am also using the HP R5500 UPS and it’s not detected correctly.
No info are coming from SNMP and configuration is good in the management module.

Any patch or news about this issue ?

I’ve just sent the SNMP walk for Riello NetMan plus SENTR19601RU. Also, please make a *nix guide for those of us who use Linux/MaOS X etc etc… I had to download the windows zip file only to see what you guys needed to collect.

I have a Dynamix UPS connected to my XP computer, which is also running Spiceworks. The connection to the UPS is through the USB port, and I was provided software to “manage” the UPS called “UPSilon 2000 for Windows”

i’ve looked in the Control Panel>>Power Management and I can’t connect via that because it doesn’t give me the option to connect via USB.

i’ve also run “wmic path Win32_Battery get” with no result.

Any ideas?

Update your UPS SNMP card’s firmware to 3.62 - I just did this on 3 of mine and they all now show up in Spiceworks just fine. You may have to do a bit of configuring in management console (via the serial cable) - but I am very happy now with SW + R5500’s.

I just checked the HP Support Website.

The R5500 use the HP Management Module. The latest firmware on the website is the v.2.1.11 (already installed).
