Hi!

I have Windows 7 volume license. I want to run virtual Windows 7 workstations on my 2012 R2 Datacenter Hyper-V host. Would additional licenses be required?

While technically you can VDI windows 7, if this is just for your home use, then download an eval copy and get a free key, or download windows server and get a free key. Otherwise be prepared to pay more to virtualize a desktop OS.

Honestly if your dealing with Windows 7, what exactly are you doing that needs that?

You need SA or VDA licenses on top of your Windows 7 licenses. @chris-microsoft wrote a how-to on this. It also applies to Windows 7.

But you also get downgrade rights, so it would probably be cheaper (as in, you already paid for it with your Datacenter license) to run 2008R2 VMs. They’re W7-based anyways.

???

Remember you cannot deploy Windows 7 Volume licenses as they are upgrade only. So you need Windows 7 OEM or Windows 7 Full Box copies before you can use the volume licenses to update them. So the volume licenses are useless in this case, they don’t serve any purpose. You’ll need the other licenses already.

No, just because you are using something for “home use” doesn’t give you carte blanch on how you use Windows. Downloading evals and using it in productions is a no-go in my book.

Yes, you will need either Windows 10 Enterprise E3 (which includes Software Assurance) Windows Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) for each of your accessing device.

Yeah, it’s only for two machines that right now are by my desk. One has software on it that finance uses. I can’t have it on their main machines as that software conflicts with their accounting application. The other machine I use occasionally for Exchange/Outlook testing, backup, pst etc. So I was thinking about freeing up some room and virtualizing them. The computers are Dells and they came with Windows 7 Pro OEM licenses. My volume license is an Open License for Windows 7 Enterprise. I also have Windows 10 E3. So the users can remote into the physical machines but if I run them as virtual I need an additional license?
