So after a long and exhaustive vetting process we ended up choosing Unitrends. Some other the others we were considering were Veeam with an ExaGrid disk, Avamar with Data Domain, and InMage (which we liked a lot but was crazy expensive with their appliance).

We have about 15 TB of data and ended up going with a pair of 833’s.

I am ins the process of moving most f our data off RDM’s and into VMDK’s so we can utilize some of the advanced features like SAN direct Backups with VMWare and agent-less SQL backups, we do plan to deploy the agent for our exchange servers because we after going back and forth about it we decided to keep Exchange on RDM mounts.

Some of our servers have large amounts of data (over 3 TB) with a low change rate and these were some of our biggest challenges with our old solution, so we will see how Unitrends is able to handle them by using incremental forever because of the low change rate this should work out well.

I will let everyone knows how our roll out goes but we took our time with picking the vendor and feel we made the right choice hopefully implantation will go just as well!

Dan - Thanks for choosing Unitrends! It’s great to hear what some of your challenges were with your old solution, and what your goals are with Unitrends. If there is anything that I can do to help as you implement, please let me know.

Great decision on going with Unitrends, you won’t regret it!

A little confused why you bought 2 x 833? If all you are working with is 15TB before dedupe, then 1 appliance would have been more than enough, unless you have some other reason? Good luck with the roll out!

Replication alone makes it worth getting the second appliance, but splitting the workload across both could also be beneficial.

Keg - The number of clients could have played a part in the decision since multiple appliances can run more jobs concurrently, and anticipated growth or Instant Recovery utilization could have also played a part in the decision. Each customer’s needs are different so while one customer with 15TB of data may only need one 833, another may need two, and a third may need a completely different appliance. Our engineers take many factors into account when recommending a specific implementation to a prospective customer.
