For the past 16 years, I’ve been moderating and managing a community of IT pros over at Toolbox.com. I’ve had a great and rewarding time helping our members connect with each other to solve problems and do their jobs better.

A few months back, Toolbox and Spiceworks came under the same wing of Ziff Davis, meaning two IT communities under the same roof. That would seem to be a problem, however, in recent times Toolbox has shifted its focus more towards editorial content. That made the Toolbox/Spiceworks combination a perfect fit! Coming soon, Toolbox will be refocusing its energy away from IT discussion and diving head-first into long-form articles.

We see this as a great opportunity! Recently, we chatted with the Spiceworks Group Admins and Moderators and I’ll borrow a little of what @larryg-profile said: As with all things in life, change happens. Where one door closes, another opens.

What’s the bottom line?

For me, that means I get to work for Spiceworks now, which is awesome! I’ve been learning the ropes for a few months and have been fortunate to interact with a number of Spiceheads, who have all been very welcoming.

For you, it means Toolbox members will be coming here to join us! While some of them may already be familiar with what Spiceworks is all about, some are not. So I thought it would be a good idea to post this discussion as a way to introduce them to you. It can be hard to join a new community but I’m sure you all are up to the task of helping them feel as welcome as I’ve felt.

So let’s say hello to those coming from Toolbox and please take a moment to tell them what you like best about Spiceworks and what they have to look forward to!

Welcome aboard, Toolboxers? What do we call you? The Box Boiz? Boxers? TB Gang? Wrench enclosure enthusiasts (WEE)?

Whatever we call you - welcome!

Oh I forgot to answer the question - which is actually a big part of this community. What I like about Spiceworks is the community and ability to find answers or guidance with some of our day-to-day IT needs and hurdles. Beyond that, it’s nice to have a big group of fellow tech enthusiasts to spitball with. I’ve made a bunch of friends here, some who I ride see-saws with, take shots with, and some I make fun of for going to bed at 5PM during a vacation :stuck_out_tongue:

I think you’ll find this is a very uniquely welcoming, intelligent, and friendly community in a day where many other sites are… well, Reddit and Twitter.

Again, welcome!

I like the camaraderie of the community, and the willingness of the IT Pros here to help others in the field. It’s a fun and laid-back atmosphere, at least the forums I frequent, but also respectful and professional.

Spiceworks also has plethora of free tools that can help any IT Pro. For instance, I have three installations of the IT Help Desk as various departments at my organization, including mine, wanted ticketing systems.

Although I think most of are just here for the pepper points…

In any case, welcome Box Boiz (Dim, I’ll help you spread that one!), and I hope your assimilation into our community is quick and painless!

Welcome to the jungle… I mean Welcome to the Community. Will be interesting to see what comes out, will these new articles be presented on Spiceworks or will they be linked from the Toolbox?

There is nothing better than the community. It is the single best tool on the site. Without fail. Questions get answered and there is always something more to learn from the daily posts.

Welcome to Spiceworks for the former Toolbox folks!

Kevin

Dimforest, they’re called Tools. Tools is what I call the items I put in my toolbox…

Kyle – Please replace @sean-spiceworks . All he does is announce features which are coming Soon™ and posts pictures of cats.

What keeps me coming to Spiceworks is:

  1. The collective knowledge of the folks and the willingness to share and offer suggestions.
  2. How vendors are allowed to participate but do not get pushy. This is really valuable.
  3. How vendors offer solutions and they actually work, not just vaporware.
  4. Connecting with good folks
  5. SpiceWorld and meeting with good folks.

Welcome! I like Spiceworks because it shows me things.

I also like it because it’s a great, well laid out and easy to use resource for IT professionals. The Daily Challenge quiz is fun, if sometimes “challenging” (you’ll learn more if you start playing it), and the frequent advice and participation of product vendors is often welcome and productive. I’ve gotten lot’s of good information here and a few people I know of even find new careers here.

In terms of involvement with the community, this says it all:

How you gonna do it if you really don’t want to dance
By standing on the wall?
(Get your back up off the wall) tell me
How you gonna do it if you really don’t wanna dance
By standing on the wall, get your back up off the wall

As others have said, the community is awesome. As a 1-man shop, SpiceWorks is my go to team of IT Pro’s to help me solve the challenges at my office. Local SpiceCorps meetings are good if they are still active. Did some research today and I am seeing a lot of inactivity. Been to SpiceWorld the last two years and it has something new to offer / learn. My opinion (1 man shop and Jack of all trades), SpiceWorld gives me the best value of any IT conference out there.

Spiceworks rules! I was a member of another tech community that shall remain nameless for years and it was OK. It was a subscription-based community so maybe that skewed the membership corporate but I found it very formal and stuffy. Spiceworks has always been a fun and welcoming place. So, in that spirit, welcome aboard, toolboxers. Doesn’t matter what you were called before. You’re spiceheads now!

Welcome Tool(boxer)s !

From my own point of view, the most valuable aspect of Spiceworks is the extremely wide range of experience and the (breadth of) perspective that provides.

Looking forward to assisting the new community members! Just tag me on your posts and I will do my best to help.

I really enjoy the ability to get quick answers to questions that anyone has. Even if it doesn’t immediately answer the question, the timeliness of the responses help with quick troubleshooting and possible spring-boarding into other avenues of thought. Also, the water cooler is awesome! Haven’t had much time to get into it lately, but its always sure to provide some sort of laugh on the daily!

Welcome, Box Boiz!

I would have to say that for me, first and foremost, it’s the “brand.”

I know that when I do a search on some obscure tech topic, and dozens of questionable sources come back in the results - if one of them is from Spiceworks - I am usually all set. Done! We are, in the end, the dependable ones.

It’s like the old joke sign that you would see on people’s desks -

Answers: free

Correct answers: $50

Or something like that. At Spiceworks, the correct answers, (although there are often incorrect ones mixed in) are still free. And the incorrect ones are usually flagged as such.

Welcome - I have been utilizing Spiceworks since 2012 and wish I would have found it sooner. The response you get back from questions it the best and the learning you get from reading others posts is beneficial.

What I think is best about this community is the incredible wealth of knowledge openly available from any number of IT pros that are more than willing to share in that knowledge (although many of us would certainly appreciate if you do a modest amount of research first prior to resorting to posting in the community). Also, as cliché as it might sound, it’s really nice that between the general community ethos and an awesome (and often underappreciated) moderation team that we can be spicy while still keeping things classy and respectful.

Box Boiz! I can dig it. I think that requires a special badge <nudge-nudge @sean-spiceworks >, if not for those that wear the moniker, then at least for the clown (I mean funny guy) who came up with it.

And yes, Toolbox buddies, welcome to Spiceworks! This is an amazing community, damn near a family, including the more dysfunctional members. I mean, who DOESn’t have a crazy uncle? Since I first discovered the Spiceworks community, I can say I am never surprised by a Google search that does not return a link to Spiceworks somewhere in the top three listings (under the Google Ad of course), if not the top listing. The Spiceworks Community is like the Vanilla Ice of the IT industry. “If there is a problem, yo, they’ll solve it!”

Anyway, welcome to the party. Looking forward to the next in-person Spiceworld, and an opportunity the welcome you in person.
