Hi, y’all - Chad here. Now that we’ve all made it through another wrapping-paper-recycling-season, it’s time to look to the new year. If you didn’t notice, a lot of stuff happened in 2023. Some of it was good; some of it was bad. But working in IT isn’t about being retroactive.
So, let’s get proactive. What are some of your IT resolutions for the new year? Are there big projects you’ve got coming up? Did you just realize that your email server says “Wang Computers” on the outside? Maybe there’s something I didn’t even think of - it’s happened twice before, after all! Let us know in the comments, and from all of us here at Spiceworks, Happy New Year!
What are your New Year’s “IT Resolutions”?
- Improve email security
- New firewall(s)
- Update EULA(s)
- Improve edge security
- Improve user authentication
- Hire more IT staff
- Improve physical security
- Switch employees back to flip phones
- Other (let us know in the comments!)

First. Had to vote for Switch Employees back to Flip Phones, knowing of course, that this is impossible.
My actual resolution is to continue ensuring our staff has the best technology and support I can provide.

My 13-year-old daughter’s Christmas wish was a flip phone. Not the new fancy touchscreen flip phones but the old school flip phone so I voted for " Switch employees back to flip phones"

Approaching 2 years in real-job IT, my main resolution is passing A plus Core 2. After that, CCNA here I come!
Seriously though, I hope I can get the training videos done by the end of the year, CCNA has so much stuff.

I voted for other because at my current position I don’t influence any of the other stuff on the list. My resolution this year is to go back to a position where I have this kind of influence. Right now I’m just one of many and a small cog in the wheel.

We did our firewall replacement this past year and this year we’ve got to replace our outdated security cameras and I’ve got a P2V project I’d like to get completed as well.

Like @randomparts said, I am a small cog. I would like to see user-level PowerShell be removed, but not machine-level. This reduces the attack surface and stops ‘curious’ people from playing Jacques Cousteau on the computer.
