Been using Adobe Reader for decades but they’ve since tighetned all the editing features that used to be included with the free version. Can you recommend a better option? Like, one that allow you to add or erase new text boxes, check boxes, you know - all the good things that the free version of Reader used to let you get away with.

I’m on the most recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader (25.001.20566), and I still have all the functions you mentioned:

Most often, I’ll just create and format the document like I want it in MS Word, then use MS Print To PDF.

That certainly works for documents you create, but what about when you receive PDF docs from others and need to mark them up or fill them out?

Your post subject says viewer, but you want an editor?
FoxIT.

If they created the document and it’s not fillable, I’ll assume they want it printed, hand-filled, scanned and returned.

Oh, I’m wayyyy too lazy for all that when Reader lets me do it all without having to walk to the scanner. Reader even lets me drop my own signature into the documents.

Rod-IT:
FoxIT.
Everything the OP mentioned can be done with Reader without spending money on FoxIT or Adobe Acrobat Pro. Not sure why OP thought these tools are no longer there.

And I have a pretty big mischievous streak (some might even call me petty) so if they’re going to send me a flat form with no text boxes, modifiable check boxes/radio buttons, or even an editable signature line, you know I’m a make a trip to the copy room, just for them

Who said anything about paying for it, FoxIT is also free as a reader, which is what the Op asked for.

We used Nitro PDF Reader as an Adobe Reader replacement for a while years back, but all the main free readers suffer from the same problem…lack of security patches on a frequent (enough) basis. Adobe, as problematic as it is, updates pretty regularly, as does the reader function in Chrome/Edge.

My bad. I read your response as you were proposing OP needed an editor, and were proposing FoxIt as the solution, and FoxIt Editor is not free. I didn’t realize you were recommending the reader.

No problem - the OPs topic says reader, but they want some editing functions which may sway the options.
I don’t use PDF enough to know what is included in free products.
For what it’s worth, LibreOffice Draw will edit PDFs for free. It can be more cumbersome to edit complex PDFs though.

Android/Google Play also offers a free PDF modification app.

I recently discovered PDF24 Tools, it is available both online and as a downloadable program: PDF24 Tools: Free PDF solutions for all PDF problems
The app has a robust set of tools and is fairly easy to use, assuming you know what you want to do from the start.

Foxit Reader to fill and check boxes, but if we need an Editor (only a few really need it) we also use Foxit Editor. The cost of 2 Editor Pro is close to 1 Adobe Pro licenses. No brainer for us here.
