I have an interview coming up soon. I’m up for a new position and I will be going through the interview process. I was wondering what questions have you asked during your interview?

depends on the position but generally, I ask what current projects are going on, what are the pain points they generally hear about, the current setup that I would be expected to manage, what is thier 5 year plan for IT. stuff along those lines.

I like to ask about dress code (never want to wear jeans on your first day if that’s just on Fridays). I ask about continuing education, do they have money available for courses or do they have a server with access to documentation.

How do you see my skillset fitting in, is there a specific problem you’re trying to solve?

Why is the position open? Could have been a personnel issue, could have been a technology issue. What you’re trying to find out here is what will make you sucessful sight unseen.

What does the office do for fun? Not every workplace has to have beige cubicle walls. Some teams have a really lively environment, some teams play video games together, some teams have a standing happy hour on thursdays; will how you have fun match their culture?

I like talking to non-management types that I will be on the team with, assuming there is going to be a team.

What did you wished you would have known before you started? What problems do you see? An interviewer should be able to give very specific answers without seeming to eager to dish company dirt.

How does your company handle ITSM?

How does your company handle project management (PMO office?)

What state of digital transformation are you in (love this one, because it befuddles most IT folks)?

How is your virtualization built out? VSAN? Hyperconverged?

Ask what they do for backup/restore, then ask what they do for disaster recovery. If they think those 2 things are the same, run screaming.

Ask for a ballpark of what has been spent this year on training for Information technology. Every manager is trained to say they are pro training, asking them to quantify it, requires them to tell you exactly whether they REALLY embrace it.

Ask what career path growth there is within the company.

Ask about tuition reimbursement there is (keep in mind once you are top of your game in Network Engineering, or Systems, you next steps are management, and you aren’t going far without a business background).

Those are on the top of my head.

Always ask why the position is open, if they don’t mention it first. This gives you a glimpse into possible issues, or it would also provide growth potential

How much training do you provide?

How much, if any, travel is involved?

Where do you see the department I am applying for in 5 years?

Does the company offer employee information security training from someone like knowbe4?

A decent interviewer/recruiter will cover almost all the need-to-know points before the interview. That makes it a lot harder to come up with questions.

I like to engage and participate in the conversation & interject relevant questions as it progresses. Sharpen up details, fill in blanks, strive for a deeper Understanding, etc. That way I don’t eat too much of their valuable time at the end asking about silly stuff the Employee Handbook will cover.

Saying things like “If you DO CHOOSE ME I’d like to hit the ground running; what would you recommend that I focus on to be best prepared to do just that FOR YOU?” seems to make a positive impression at the end of the interview. (NLP practitioners will notice the emphasis…)

I usually ask questions about the company and culture. I also ask questions about what they are having problems with and what priorities they need me to address day one. I usually skip technical details at it tends to be not important until you have job. I also tend to not ask too much about benefits etc, as that would be more job offer / acceptance conversation. I make sure offer is going to be in range that would be acceptable.

In a first interview, you are trying to make an impression and decide if you can work with each other.
