Remember when our biggest worry was figuring out how to build your newest LEGO set?
For many of us, there’s at least one LEGO set that stood out as the holy grail of childhood dreams. One LEGO set to rule them all, perhaps. Maybe you actually had it and still remember it in its glory, or maybe you always wanted the set, but never even got to play with one.
As a kid, I loved space and dreaming of the spaceship that could take me there. The LEGO Space set was my favorite set as a child. With its sleek design, astronaut mini-figures, and iconic spaceship, for me, this LEGO set was, and if I’m being honest still is, the epitome of cool. I mean, what kid wouldn’t want to build their own LEGO spaceship?
We’ve talked about ultimate LEGO sets before and all-time favorites, but which LEGO set did you dream about as a child?
Feel free to explore these vintage sets to see if any were your favorites as a child.
For those heading to SpiceWorld, be sure to catch our sessions and stop by our booth #404 to connect with us for a chance at winning a The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dur LEGO set. Even if you aren’t attending, still check it out, at 5,471 pieces it’s incredible.

The internal combustion engine set.
It had sets to create everything from straight 4 to V8s.
Man it was cool, and if you got the Lego motor, you could set it up to make it look like it actually worked.
What is entertaining is the spark plug wire kits attached via the house kits from Lego that were faucets
See the faucets on the back of it?

Did not have a favorite LEGO set as a kid… had this instead.

This was my favorite set growing up.

As a kid the two early 70s truck kits were my springboard to building vehicles.
As an adult I still pine for the Lego Technic Unimog, with the working crane

I can still remember wanting this one as a kid, but couldn’t afford it: Lego - Technic - Alles über Lego - Technic Modelle und mehr...
I did get this one Lego - Technic - Alles über Lego - Technic Modelle und mehr... which is still assembled and collecting a modicum of dust in my room
Nowadays I would consider the Titanic (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/lego-titanic-10294) a challenge, but with its size I wouldn’t know where to display that thing, which is what I would build it for (besides the challenge). Other than that Optimus Prime (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/optimus-prime-10302) also is a decent contender (and a bit smaller than Titanic
), but for both the cost also puts me off… I’m willing to spoil myself a bit, but those prices are a bit too much for just a build of Lego.

This is the closest thing I could find to the one I had:

This is the one I always wanted…
Death Star™ 75159 | Star Wars™ | Buy online at the Official LEGO® Shop US
But I’d have been happy with any big Star Wars kit…

The Bucket. We bought various sets, would build them, save the manuals but they always ended up in the bucket.
There was some city sets with cars and planes. Some Star Wars kits too, but I can’t recall a specific one.

Me too. Lincoln Logs. Don’t believe I had heard of Lego until I had kids.

I don’t seem to recall any Lego sets, just the bucket of bricks which was entertaining enough.

This is the true spirit of LEGO. You just build whatever you can/want.

I am with the Bucket Brigade. In my opinion, all of the kits have stifled the creativity that Lego was designed to stimulate.

Starwars kits like the Millennium Falcon. Think I still have an Imperial Shuttle set intact, while the rest have been scrambled in a lego catchall bin. Just build what ever you mind is set to after that.

Our mother made drawstring LEGO bags for my brother and me that were supposed to spread out flat on the floor. Mine didn’t lie quite flat, so I was always jealous of his. He was also 4 years older, so I wanted whatever he was building. He got the first Space sets.
I am also forever grateful to our Uncle Bill, an architect, who taught us proper building principles. I’ve made some amazing houses, ships, fantasy lands, etc with those bricks. (Yes, I ended up with the entire collection, and have added many more since.)

I’m old, I remember when the gears came out, no particular theme, just gears. Now you could make things that moved. There was a little motor also. Never understood the later themes, makes legos like a pre-planned jig saw puzzle…

Mine older sibling used to get the legos, I was relegated to lock blocks
Thanks for dredging up this childhood trauma

I had a train set that looked similar to this:
Rubber bands on the locomotive drive wheels, tender was the battery pack. Had this set for years.

The Caribbean Clipper. I used to turn the aft lanterns to the side so I could justify the ship flying with jet engines.
