out of curiosity what is everyone’s policy on interns / temps / co-ops who bring in their own laptops and plug into YOUR network ?

We provide the hardware. If a lawyer wants to that’s a different story. We did hook up the “clerks” (intern lawyers) so they can get their email on their phones, but other than that it’s a non-issue since we provide them with the hardware. If they don’t want to use our hardware and insist on using their own laptops we do not give them access to our network, but rather sign them in using a guest account that can only get to the internet. That usually is enough to get them to realize they’ll be a lot more productive using our hardware (since they can’t get to any of their files :-).

The general rule is no but there are a few exceptions.

Anything personally owned goes on the wireless only, no access to inside. Good luck working nearly as effectively as anyone else, even if I do give you VPN access. I provide a company-owned machine to everyone anyway.

There is a small exception for one user that uses his personal laptop at a remote site but he is to bring his device to IT for scanning and cleaning before he is allowed to.

My policy is outside laptops access to the wireless for customers only.

For everyone else company equipment only.

I had someone who brought her Mac in, because she “just couldn’t get anything done” on her work pc. No way - which led to months of her dropping by to ask why I wouldn’t issue Macs. That was fun.

we allow it.

problem is, that we have to allow admin rights on the laptops, so users can install whatever they want on it.

it seems a bit silly to allow admin rights on a laptop, but not allow a users laptop on the network. if it causes issues, we can usually detect it (after we are aware it’s causing issues), and just block it from the network.

i dont recall any issues working like that actually…

oh… replace ‘interns’ with ‘staff’

external people get guest wifi access, or if they need access to our systems, then we grant them a RDS login.

Nope, do not allow.

Only company provided hardware gets attached to the network.

If an employee wants to bring in their own machine to play Solitaire during their lunch break great, but will still not have network/internet access.

No personal equipment on our network - they either use company issued equipment or use the wireless that is set up in the DMZ.

They are put on a guest network outside the firewall or device is scanned before being allowed. The scanning only applies to actual employees with non-company equipment (very rare). The guest network is for guest and visitors.

Non-Company devices are not permitted on the production wired or wireless network. Period.

However, the do provide an isolated guest wireless network that provides internet access only.
