Just looking for some guidance and direction. I have just taken a sales position with a VAR/Reseller and although I have several years of sales experience I am simply a “user” when it comes to technology. I know the industry as a whole is multi-faceted, so I’m just looking for a place to grow my knowledge from the basics and then move on to the advanced. Where is the best place to start?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

www.cybrary.it for learning your IT stuff.
YouTube, here, setup a lab and play - there are many ways, but you need to be specific about what you intend to understand

for Microsoft Software take a look at their virtual academy for some free training. If the company that you work for is partnered with any of the vendors then use their training to get into the basics.

Get the basics down (I’d suggest Networking, but that’s just me) and go from there. Chase what interests you. Microsoft applications bore the TAR out of me, but their applications as security vulnerabilities when used by end users? Fascinating! Maybe you’ll find Virtual Resources incredibly full filling and hunt down the next great cloud vendor and be their guru? Who knows! But anywhere you start is better than never starting at all.

Plenty of good resources out there… Microsoft Virtual Academy is one… Spiceworks… even YouTube. Look up free training resources in Google and check those that interest you and start from there. I would not pay for something until you know it’s what you want to learn about… there are too many free resources out there.

The first place to start is with you. What do you want to learn or specialize in?
If you are looking for general stuff at first, I’d recommend looking at stuff for Network+ and MCSA stuff. Lots of good resources out there for both (free and paid).
Also, build a home lab. There are lots of threads throughout Spiceworks which will assist you in setting up a good home lab in order to start learning.
As for moving to advanced stuff, you will definitely want to know what you want to specialize in before going that route. Networking? Security? Windows Sys Admin? Linux Sys Admin? DBA? Lots of directions to pick from and grow.
