We have around 112 desktops with regular use and lately we are experiencing a weird instance where as the newer devices that were purchased with windows 7 pro have been “losing” the product key. The user will come to work in the morning to a message telling them the product key needs activating and will remove the wallpaper and will show the message in the bottom right corner saying evaluation copy. For now we are using our volume license to remedy the issue.

Are we missing something here?
Is there a deeper problem we need to be worried about?

Who did you purchase the new devices from? It sounds like the media/key they used to install Windows 7 is funky. You can definitely use your VL media & key to reinstall Windows 7 Pro, but that doesn’t help with WHY they are doing that to begin with.

I’m not sure of a solution, but I have a PC that’s experienced this same issue twice now. It’s an OEM license of Windows 7. Each time I have been able to reactivate it without issue, but it does seem odd.

A malware infection could definitely cause this.

We purchase direct from dell premier.

Currently running Kaspersky on all our devices.

If you’re using VL, I would setup the Volume Activation Management Tool and see what kind of license they’re using. It’s possible they somehow shipped with a KMS key and expired. Although, if you have volume licensing, why aren’t you reimaging them?
