Also taking pride in failings or bad situations in general. I remember growing up in PA and Pittsburgh folks took great civic pride as having the worst roads in the state and would argue vociferously if you claimed otherwise. Sports teams too - our team sucks worse than your team. I once got in an argument in Vegas with someone from Detroit who claimed that Detroit had a higher per capita murder rate than Baltimore - I took up for the hometown and we established that Baltimore had edged out Detroit year to date - although by Dec 31 I recall that Detroit had regained the lead much to this guy’s satisfaction I’m sure. Unless he got murdered by then of course.

I don’t… or hopefully don’t often… feel that in real life, but definitely in movies and books sometimes. In fiction I think it is easier to make a character all bad, the symbol of evil, or bad guys everywhere, and you cheer when they finally meet justice. In real life, not always, but often, it is less clear. People have good in them even when sometimes they screw up and do something bad.
The saddest cases for me are when people are screwing something up in a super huge bad way, but they actually believe that they are doing good.
People who make a living from cheating others seem to be clearly bad guys, and I like to read about ransomware groups getting caught… but then I read another story about human trafficking and people being forced to be part of things like that, and it goes all murky again.
Oh, in sports too.
I cheer when the other team fumbles. I wonder if competition is inherently uncompassionate, or if it’s just me being overcompetitive.

Apparently not where I live! Hadn’t heard a thing about it and just had to look it up, and now I’m wondering how I’m going to get my 10 minutes back.

So, what’s a word for the pleasure derived by someone from another person’s misfortune when the misfortune is karmic payback? That type of shadenfruede seems like it would be more socially acceptable.

Same word, just more emphasis on the last half when spoken…doesn’t translate to text well, though.
