In less than a week I will start work at a data center, my first ever, and I am not 100% sure what I will be doing. I am being brought on as data center hardware support tech, and best I can tell is that I will be doing break-fix and the occasional ticket. The job description make it seem more involved, but after talking with the manager and recruiter about the job, I seem to be back at my original opinion.

Those who have worked for data centers, what was a typical day-to-day like?

Mine were pretty boring. Rack an stack, tons of cabling, power charting… You may not wind up with half that much. If it wasn’t for the fact that I was also architecting for the company, I’d have been bored into a coma

Usual description. If there is more, they’ll tend to be explicit about it.

Bring layers, as you can get cold.

yupsss…it just like my job right now, pretty borred, just monitoring, hdd fault, psu fault, mounting a server …

but you can use the spare time to learn.

don’t forget your headphones… all the hvac and serversare loud…

I know a couple people that work in data centres that are hardware technicians. Primarily you are waiting for an alert to trigger. Once a drive has come in failed, or adding a new piece of equipment for someone else to configure. A lot of it will be waiting for something to happen and if there is something major it will escalate to someone else and you will be hands off.

Rack and stack, run cable, freeze to death (if you’re prone to being cold easily), and be stalked by ghosts if you work the night shift. Bring a jacket, a book, a flashlight, and a good Leatherman/utility kit.

Man I would love to work in a Data Center…

Be prepared for LOUD NOISES. Make sure you have some good headphones because the cheapo Apple ones won’t work over the absolute roar of the place.
