So, usually World Backup Day has a big presence on Spiceworks. I usually see something featured about it, but today I can’t find anything.

It seems that World Backup Day has been forgotten. Too bad, as I was hoping for another 50% off sale from CloudBerry Backup​.

In light of a forgotten world backup day, why don’t we discuss a time we forgot to backup? I will go first.

A number of years ago, before I knew anything about backing up SQL transaction logs, we backed up our SQL servers at a VM level once per day. Well, we started having some issues with a hypervisor and low and behold before we could migrate, we lost the array. While we technically did have a backup, because we weren’t doing transaction log backups through SQL, we lost an entire day’s worth of work for multiple applications.

As the IT Director, I had to get up in front of the rest of my directors and give them the bad news. This was a watershed moment for me in IT. If they had hurled insults and obscenities, I probably would have walked out the door and started a new career. But they were very kind and understanding, and we worked through it together.

Don’t forget to backup your SQL transaction logs! It can save you a lot of time and pain and embarrassment and awkward conversations.

It has been quiet this year.

I posted something to my users this morning - more of a reminder that you should be backing up.

I once did work for a company and took a look at their SQL server. They had a 1 GB database with a 120GB transaction log. Tlog backups were never set up and it ran that way for years.

Well, @sean-spiceworks ​ posted something about WBD here 48 minutes after this post: World Backup Day 2021: Because there's never a bad time to back up!

The question is did my post jog his memory, or did I just beat him to the punch? I think it was the former…

Ugh, this one is my bad. I do not know how this slipped my mind. Luckily, @suzanne-spiceworks ​ reminded me of this after our Town Hall (company meeting) and I whipped that up real quick while I work at updating the WBD hub/homepage. I should be done with that soon!
