I am in a point in my life where I am changing careers. I am currently a Business Owner, and have been taking steps to transition into IT, which sounds crazy, but I love this stuff! I currently have an A+ certification, and am studying for Network+ currently. I have a friend who works in an ISD’s Tech department who was talking to the System Admin at another school who mentioned he just got approved for the budget to hire a Junior Admin in Training. Said System Admin mentioned that he needs someone soon, and that if I was at least A+ certified and had some college that I should apply.

So my question is this; What should my title on my resume be? IT, Tech Support, Help Desk? Thanks guys!

I’m not sure you can use a title unless you’ve been in that position officially. What you should do is post your business owner experience, as well as your education.

The truth? Self-employed.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I should have mentioned, I did do data maintenance(Back-ups of e-mail, resumes, company information, maps from Chrome Drive to External HDD’s) in an official capacity for a recruiting company my In-laws own. That was basically Help-Desk level work and I still independently work on their PC’s/Laptops/E-mail.

Don’t focus on a title, focus on your skills, knowledge, and your abilities. You are selling yourself, not your title.

Thanks guys, that’s what I will focus on then! That makes sense, I was debating on putting a title on the resume at all…don’t want to seem too cheeky hahaha.

The penguin speaks the truth…

PS. Is it bad that read people’s suggestions differently based on their avatars? But seriously, focus on skills/abilities, not title.

Manager, Director, President, Dictator For Life?

Rivitir’s point is good. Much will depend on how the résumé and cover letter are crafted. Having owed a business is a talking point, but what was done?—

  • Network infrastructure setup (routers, POP, firewalls, etc)?

  • ISP negotiations?

  • Build Windows servers (& which roles)?

  • Setup Linux servers (& types)?

  • Domain/DNS setup and maintenance?

  • Supervise technicians?

  • Billing and contracts?

  • et al
