In the past couple of days, we’ve seen multiple systems locking up, usually when a certain app is launched. At one office Chrome was the culprit and I assumed reloading it would fix the issue, but it didn’t. I later discovered that logging into the local and domain admin profiles would cause the system to stop at the “configuring desktop update” screen. And just today I learned of more offices with this issue. The reason I’m thinking a Windows Update at present is that at some offices updates get tested first, then released and they seem to be okay. Places that don’t have this are the ones running into the issue. I’ve tried removing recent updates from some systems, but with no fix as yet. Very strange. Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone else had noticed this.

Thanks!

4 Spice ups

Nope, with the exception of a few machines that haven’t been turned on recently, my whole environment of a little over 100 workstations and 30 servers is reported as fully updated. Haven’t heard anything from users. It might be the Creator’s Update if you have that pushing through. I pushed that upgrade manually a month ago and had some issues then.

Thanks for the reply. Most of these systems are Windows 7, some 8 and 10. We did receive an e-mail from one of the EMR vendors we work with stating that the following updates have caused problems for them:

4021558, 4022718, 4022719, 4022722, 4022724

We’ve also confirmed issues with a few other vendors, although only printing issues definitively so far. Still not sure what is causing the lock ups.

The issue ended up being caused by Webroot. The common thread ended up being those with expired subscriptions. So, either an update to the AV client or a Windows Update or something else caused the lockups. Quite strange. Removing or re-installing the AV fixed the issue.

Very interesting. Appreciate you letting us know!
