We have for some years used User Profile Central (UPC) from Ehlertech to transfer users from old PCs to their new one.

Not only stray documents outside OneDrive but also user preferences, shortcuts, browser favorites from Chrome, Edge and Firefox etc.

Since MS released the new edition of “Windows Backup for Organizations in windows 11” we have looked into using it in a similar way but it really doesn’t do much of what we need?

Docoments outside the users profile isn’t found (and no option for Windows backup to search for such), no shortcuts, no App settings (eeg. IMAP mail accounts), Firefox, Chrome (not even Edge) favorites does not transfer over. Actually it seems only settings for Microsoft “Modern UI” Apps is transferred.

Is this really what to expect from Microsoft Backup?

Yes, as often Microsoft throw new product together so quick they overlook so many things or push their agenda to force you into only using their products.

Out of curiousity have you only used Ehlertech UPC or have you used their USMTgui? I pressume its just a gui for microsofts USMT?

You should look at Folder redirection or FSLogix containers for user profiles, so you don’t need to migrate them.

They will simply follow the users.

Another option I used heavily to transfer user profile data to new computers before we had OneDrive implemented was TransWiz from ForensiT. Also used their ProfWiz product to transfer user profile data to computers on a new domain when we did a domain change.

By the time Microsoft finishes the Windows Migration Tool, win 10 will be months past EOL…Pffft
It’s sad, they figured it out, they have a decent idea, but, dang MS, get it together…
You did a server migration tool..can you do one for the poor consumers?

As the tool says…backup ?

The problem is that MS mainly have tools to migrate “Windows Users” but often leave out 3rd party products and/or the settings for newer products (like browsers and or ERP applications).

This is like asking people to help you find your car keys after you went for a fishing trip in the ocean and the last you remember was putting the keys in your pocket 1 week ago before you boarded the boat ? There is a chance it is in the sea now ?

  1. Use Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) on both old and new PC.
  2. Run scanstate.exe on old pc to create migration store contains user profile and save it to external drive.
  3. Run loadstate.exe on new pc to restore the migration store profile in new pc.

Yes, the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft’s website is retail, but it’ll still activate with your volume license key if you’re using AD-based activation. Still, it’s better to sort out the Admin Center issue. Get in touch with your reseller like TechSoup, have them added as a partner in your Admin Center, and they should be able to help move the licenses to the right account and get you proper access to the volume media.
