I have an Ubuntu server with 10.04.4 installed, I can ssh into the server just fine with putty.

But spiceworks won’t inventory it. When I manually tell spiceworks how to connect to it and enter the credentials it says, Yep that worked Scanning the device, but then nothing seems to happen and it still just shows as an unknown device.

Any ideas or suggestions ?

Thanks

delete the device from inventory. Add a scan range that includes ONLY the IP address of the Ub server. Scan. If it adds correctly, re-add the full scan range and remove the individual IP scan range.

I just tired that and it still failed to add it to inventory.

Does spiceworks have issues scanning other linux/ubuntu servers?

When you log into the Ub server, do you notice it takes around 15 or more seconds from putty? If yes, then you need to increase your SSH timeout on the scan settings page, at the bottom, in show additional scan settings change ssh connection timeout to something higher than how long it takes to log in.

I don’t have any other linux servers at this location to test.

I increased the ssh timeout but that didn’t make a difference, and putty connects instantly anyway.

not sure if your Ub server has X installed. If it does, you might try pointing it to

http://spiceworks-server/fix

There is no GUI so I can’t do that.
