Walmart expands drone delivery to five new cities

Walmart customers in five major US cities are about to experience a new kind of fast. The retail giant has announced the expansion of its drone delivery program to Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa. This makes Walmart the first retailer to scale ultra-fast drone delivery across five states.

That’s right. While shoppers are still adjusting to the idea of groceries and household essentials arriving by air, Walmart is already racing ahead, making sky-high convenience a reality for millions more Americans.

Launched in 2021, Walmart’s drone delivery service has already completed over 150,000 successful flights, with orders arriving in as little as 30 minutes. This latest expansion brings drone delivery to 100 new stores, with the help of Alphabet’s Wing, a company with the FAA nod to fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) up to six miles from the store.

The expanded service builds on successful operations in Northwest Arkansas and Dallas-Fort Worth, where drone delivery has been used for everything from cold medicine and baby formula to pet food and ice cream. Among the most popular items: bananas, lemons, eggs, and dog chow.

“This is real drone delivery at scale,” says Adam Woodworth, CEO of Wing. “People across Dallas-Fort Worth already consider drone delivery part of everyday shopping. Now millions more will get to experience this speed and convenience.”

For Walmart, the message is clear: drone delivery isn’t a gimmick — it’s the future. “As we look ahead, drone delivery will remain a key part of our commitment to redefining retail,” says Greg Cathey, SVP of Walmart US Transformation and Innovation. “We’re pushing the boundaries of convenience to better serve our customers, making shopping faster and easier than ever before.”

Customers in the new service areas can sign up for notifications at wing.com/walmart, while residents in Dallas-Fort Worth can check eligibility now at wing.com/dfw.

And it’s not just drones. Walmart continues to offer a buffet of fast delivery options, from Express Delivery (in as little as 30 minutes) to Late-Night Delivery and even InHome Delivery, where groceries are stocked directly into your fridge. Nonetheless, as drone deliveries become more common, Walmart is showing how technology can revolutionize the last mile, one package at a time.
