Gears of War: Reloaded is an upcoming third-person shooter co-developed by The Coalition, Sumo Digital and Disbelief, and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is the second remaster of the original Gears of War (2006), the first installment in the Gears of War franchise developed by Epic Games. Announced in May 2025, Gears of War: Reloaded presents the title at 4K resolution and 60 frames-per-second for the campaign, while supporting 120FPS performance in the game's multiplayer modes. All previously released post-launch content from the game's first remaster Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (2015) will be included from launch, and the game supports both cross-platform play and full cross-progression across all supported consoles and PC.

Gears of War: Reloaded will be released on August 26, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S, marking the first appearance of the original game on Steam, and the franchise's debut on PlayStation platforms.

Gameplay

[edit]

Gears of War Reloaded is built on the foundation of the game's previous remaster, Gears of War Ultimate Edition (2015), with an enhanced presentation at 4K resolution and 60 frames-per-second for the campaign, and 120FPS for multiplayer.[1] Reloaded will also support High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) displays, as well as spatial audio technology.[2] The port also collects all previously released post-launch downloadable content (DLC) from Ultimate Edition, including the bonus campaign from the original Windows release, multiplayer maps and player cosmetics.[3] Players using a Microsoft Account will also unlock full cross progression for the campaign and multiplayer components across all platforms, as well as cross-platform invites for multiplayer and the co-op campaign.[4]

Development

[edit]

Reloaded was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2025 as part of the franchise’s 20th-anniversary celebrations. Built in Unreal Engine 3, it was co-developed by The Coalition alongside Sumo Digital and Disbelief to modernize graphics, performance, and cross-platform functionality.[5]

Multiplayer beta

[edit]

A public multiplayer beta ran over two weekends in June 2025, featuring modes such as Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and Warzone. Access was granted to pre-order customers and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Beta participants earned exclusive skins for Adam Fenix and the Anya Stroud character.[6]

Release

[edit]

Gears of War: Reloaded will release on August 26, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S, in addition to being available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass and supporting Play Anywhere on Windows and Xbox Series X/S.[7] Reloaded marks the original game's debut on Steam and the first ever release in the franchise on PlayStation consoles after historically being exclusive to Xbox platforms for nearly two decades.[8] A physical release of the title will be distributed exclusively for PlayStation 5.[9] Microsoft confirmed that the PS5 version will not release in Japan due to local platform policies.[10] Players who purchased Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (2015) digitally on Windows, Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S prior to the announcement in May 2025 will be entitled to Gears of War: Reloaded at no additional cost.[11]

Reception

[edit]

Though full reviews await the August launch, early reactions to beta builds and trailers have been positive, with critics praising the enhanced visual fidelity, performance upgrades, and faithful preservation of the original’s gameplay design.[5]
