Is this truly a new title?

[edit]

Do we know for certain that this is definitely a new title, rather than a continuation of one of its predecessors? Typically when two titles are unified it effectively just deactivates the one while continuing the lineage of the other. (In fact, I'm struggling to think of an occasion where both titles were deactivated and replaced with a third.) Do we know for certain that's what's happening here? I'd be inclined for this article to not exist until we know for certain. — Czello (music) 13:21, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Czello I had refrained from creating this page myself for the same reasons (and also confusion if this would retain the Continental Rules and how it might affect the Continental Classic). Based on Fightful Select's report though, it does sound like this is a new title (at the very least, the Continental Championship is in fact ending). The most recent championship unification I can recall where both titles were retired to create a new one was in NJPW a few years ago, where they unified the IWGP Intercontinental Championship and IWGP Heavyweight Championship to create the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Yes, the articles I've read do seem to use the word "inaugural", so it does look to be new. Also I can't believe I forgot about the IWGP WHC. — Czello (music) 06:03, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is a bad idea. Isn't the match a winner takes all bout? It's just the two titles coming together under one, no? Similar to the WWE Championship and the WWE Universal Championship becomes the WWE Undisputed Championship. That's how I precieved it. Lemonademan22 (talk) 12:41, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Lemonademan22 It was originally announced as Winner Takes All, but then it was confirmed as a unification. From what reports suggest, this will be like the NJPW example I provided in my last response (both titles will be retired to create a new title). JDC808 01:34, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
