The caption for the image of Queen with Maradona under the A social category formed by colonialism subsection is incorrect but I am unable to correct it as the article is semi-protected. It currently says, "The members of Queen were of British descent and Diego Maradona (in the center) was of Galician, Italian, Croatian and Guaraní descent." However, Freddie Mercury was not of British descent. Neither he nor any of his ancestors had been to Europe, let alone Britain, ever, so it would be impossible for him to be of British descent.

Thanks. I've removed the image. The caption was WP:OR at best. I also removed the pseudoscientific 'ancestry' map, for the same reason I removed it last time, as mentioned at #Questionable map. Grayfell (talk) 22:32, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"Census and social definitions in different regions"

[edit]

Too much of this section is demographic data which uncritically accepts a definition of white people, rather than addressing the concept of "white people". It could likely do with some pretty significant pruning. CAVincent (talk) 05:00, 24 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Every time I look closer at these numbers I see big problems. There is a long-term recurring issue with misguided editors or vandals subtly fudging numbers for demographic data across Wikipedia, but this appears to be something else. Some of the sources I just removed either do not support the specific numbers, or directly contradict them. This kind of thing should be removed. Leaving gaps is better than misinformation. Grayfell (talk) 21:31, 24 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've cut a bit tonight, mostly images, and may do some more in the next few days. It appears that a number of references do not support the claims they are attached to, at least not without some combination of WP:OR and WP:SYNTH and a (presumably good faith) assumption that fair skin and/or European heritage is uncomplicatedly the same as "white people". Unfortunately, a number of these sources are not in English, which is sadly the only language in which I feel comfortable evaluating the reliability of the source. exclusion of south african and middle eastern in definition

[edit]

the first paragraph states;

"White is a racial classification of people generally used for those of predominantly European ancestry."

if one googles "white racial definition," that paragraph comes up. Seems bias against those from south africa or the middle east 2600:1000:B107:2E85:7D52:D1CE:4431:B91E (talk) 02:35, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

As the lead explains, "Contemporary anthropologists and other scientists, while recognizing the reality of biological variation between different human populations, regard the concept of a unified, distinguishable "White race" as a social construct with no scientific basis." So with that in mind, what, exactly, is your point? Grayfell (talk) 04:29, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My point is pretty clear greyson; when you google definition of white race you get
"White is a racial classification of people generally used for those of predominantly European ancestry."
Not that race is a social construct. If someone is doing a quick search they're given information that excludes south african and middle eastern people from that definition.
On a side note, your passive aggressive attitude towards this "talk," is unnecessary. 2600:1000:B107:2E85:7D52:D1CE:4431:B91E (talk) 18:33, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your point is not clear. Per White South Africans: White South Africans are South Africans of European descent. What, exactly, is the problem with this article, and how would that problem be fixed? Grayfell (talk) 19:18, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My point was clear the first time and i've reiterated my concern twice.
Middle eastern people are not of European decent.
Your combative approach to this discussion is absurd and I will not be continuing this any further. 2600:1000:B107:2E85:7D52:D1CE:4431:B91E (talk) 21:35, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, you're not making sense. Clearly, people from the Middle East aren't of European descent, and white South Africans are, so what's your point? Asking you for clarification isn't "combativeness," nor is it "passive-aggressive." this is an encyclopedia, and we like to know what you're talking about. Change "White" to "white" -- no justification for "white" to be capitalized unless the word is a the beginning of a sentence. Fluffycats1698 (talk) 22:52, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: per MOS:RACECAPS White and white are both fine. Cannolis (talk) 23:30, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
