Tensions rise as a possible Cardassian attack looms, and Picard, Dr. Crusher and Worf are sent on a secret mission to find and destroy suspected biological weapons. The headstrong replacement captain, Edward Jellico, is cold and demanding - to the dismay of the remaining crew. But when Picard is captured by the Cardassians and tortured for information, dismay turns to anger and resistance as Jellico's plans exclude a rescue mission. With his options running out, Picard must fight to save his sanity and ultimately, his life.
no amount of funny memes can prepare you for the actual emotional impact of the “there are four lights!” scene!!! one of the greatest TV moments of all time imo! watching warner and stewart go back and forth is blissfully good. captain jellico makes me want to gnaw on concrete.
Chain of Command is considered a classic and some of the best Star Trek, period, but I was never super into it because of the torture stuff, it just felt too bleak for what I want out of Star Trek. Usually I love bleakness and brutality but when it comes to Star Trek I'm a weenie, I just want the characters talking about subspace distortions and goofing off in the holodeck, but on this rewatch I enjoyed this a lot more. The stuff with Jellico (Ronny Cox) is great, a new captain barging onto the Enterprise and being a hardass (even going so far as being the first person to ever tell Troi to put a proper uniform on), it's…
Best two-parter episode so far other than The Best of Both Worlds. Ronny Cox as Jellico is a real highlight for me personally, and is a shining example of why Roddenberry’s “no interpersonal conflict” rule sucked so bad.
The best parts here, obviously, are the interrogation scenes between Picard and Gul Madrid. In a situation lifted right out of the third part of Nineteen Eighty-Four, we get to see a side of Picard never seen before, completely stripped (literally) of everything, subjected to the worst horrors imaginable, and he still won’t break. Really shows why he’s THE fuckin’ Captain.
Between this, Conspiracy, and Unification, it’s a real wonder to me that Starfleet doesn’t completely eat shit on a regular basis. The Cardassians are so ahead of them in terms of strategy and spying, and Starfleet higher ups just seem to be completely incompetent without people who are on the Enterprise keeping everything intact.
Part I: I'm on Team Jellico, at least when it comes to Troi's uniform.
Part II: For the first time, Part II is better than Part I, and a sign of things to come once Deep Space 9 gets good and going. Cardassians are proving to be formidable villains where the Ferengi and neo-Romulans had yet to truly succeed.
Having "Chain of Command" as a two-parter for Star Trek: The Next Generation was a smart move. It makes the torture scenes with Picard much more intense. It's one of the few episodes I am not sure if Picard can get out this situation.
