The official ceremony, held at the Saweni campus of the University of Fiji, marked the beginning of a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on joint academic programs, research, and the preservation of Pacific cultures.

University of Fiji Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized that the agreement was more than ceremonial. “This is a meaningful step towards building resilience, innovation, and unity through regional education,” she said.

The MoU highlights key areas for collaboration, including student and faculty mobility, joint research conferences, development of new academic programs, and cultural promotion initiatives centered on indigenous knowledge and Pacific arts.

Dr. Waninga reaffirmed the University of Goroka’s strength in teacher education and Melanesian studies, suggesting these areas would drive future collaboration. He expressed enthusiasm for ongoing exchanges and partnerships across campuses.

The two universities pledged to focus on educational equity, with special attention to students in rural and disadvantaged communities. Both institutions stressed the importance of preserving traditional knowledge while modernizing education in the region.

The agreement signals a major step in regional integration, showcasing how PNG and Fiji can lead the Pacific through shared academic excellence and cultural unity.
