Vietnam War Commemoration and Navy Week program welcomed home hundreds of Texas Veterans with week-long commemorative

The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration will host “Welcome Home! A Nation Honors our Vietnam Veterans and their Families,” on the National Mall in Washington, DC, May 11-13.

Senior Vietnam Veterans do not usually get to participate in events held in San Antonio, so VA nurses brought the event to them.

In 2001, VA made diabetes a presumptive condition for disability compensation. Veterans who served with "boots on the ground" in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos during the Vietnam war were eligible. The decision was based on an Institute of Medicine report that found a possible association between exposure to Agent Orange and diabetes.

VE-HEROeS is the first nationwide survey of both the physical and mental health of Vietnam War Veterans in more than 30 years. It sought survey data from more than 45,000 Vietnam-era Veterans, as well as 11,000 matched controls.

When asked about the overall quality of care HBPC-enrolled Veterans received during the last 30 days of life, 53% of family members gave an overall rating of "excellent," using the Bereaved Family Survey (BFS).

What too often goes unsaid during conversations and commemorations about the Vietnam War is recognition of the women who served during that time.
