Events

Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and every 90 minutes, someone dies from the disease.

The ALS community faces daunting challenges. Team Gleason was founded to provide critical equipment, technology, long-term innovative care services, and life adventures for ALS patients.

Since 2011, we have provided over $20 million in services while partnering with technology giants and innovators to create enhanced technology to support added independence for those living with ALS.

Team Gleason has always led with “yes.” We aim to reach 70-100% of ALS families so they know our services and what is available to them. Our expanded goal is to accelerate access further so people living with the disease have the same level of service and expertise no matter where they are diagnosed or live.

Funds from events organized by Team Gleason and people like you are crucial to helping Team Gleason. Each year, dozens of people host large and small events that result in hundreds of thousands of dollars being raised to strengthen Team Gleason’s life-changing direct-service programs.

ALS Communities Connected in Purpose: F5

Dale, a Lafayette native, faced a life-altering challenge in October 2020 when he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Struggling with symptoms like a persistent hoarse throat and loss of arm strength, Dale’s journey led him to Houston Methodist, where his condition was confirmed. Rather than letting the diagnosis define him, Dale used it as a catalyst to create a powerful community-driven event: the Fin Feather Fur Food Festival (F5) in Lafayette, LA.

Inspired by the work of Team Gleason—a nonprofit providing resources, technology, and adventures for those living with ALS—Dale and his closest friends formed the F5 Festival, a cooking competition that unites food lovers and supports a meaningful cause. “After meeting with Team Gleason and seeing how much they help people with ALS, it was an easy decision to work alongside them,” Dale explains. His admiration for Team Gleason’s mission of helping individuals live fully in the moment became the heart of his vision for F5.

The F5 Festival, now in its fourth year, has become a staple event in Lafayette, drawing over 1,500 attendees annually and raising an astounding $500,000+ in just three years. With the support of family, friends, and colleagues, Dale has transformed the festival into more than just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and hope for those living with ALS.

“It wasn’t about me. It never was. It’s about Team Gleason. It’s about the ALS community,” Dale says. The overwhelming turnout and support have not only raised funds but also created a space for connection among those affected by ALS, their caregivers, and supporters.

What is the meaning behind “Punt for ALS”?

Steve Gleason has inspired his teammates, the city of New Orleans, and football fans everywhere after famously blocking a punt from their rival team, the Atlanta Falcons, during the New Orleans Saints’ first game back in the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. This iconic moment in 2006 became a symbol of hope and resilience for the city of New Orleans and its football team.

Since his ALS diagnosis in 2011, Steve has continued to inspire the ALS community. The hashtag #neverpunt, derived from his history-making blocked punt, embodies Steve Gleason’s approach to life, urging a relentless pursuit of goals despite challenges or setbacks. It reflects his courage in facing ALS and his continued advocacy and inspiration for others living with this disease and beyond.

Thomas thought he would have a little fun with his friend by revising Steve’s motto and logo for the season. In a surprise visit to Steve, Thomas said, “I’ve been waiting 10 years to do this” and crossed out the ‘Never’ on Steve’s “#neverpunt” shirt.
