With almost a quarter of all Veterans in the United States residing in rural communities, ensuring they receive quality health care close to home is more important than ever. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) actively works to meet these Veterans in their own communities and promote opportunities to live happy and healthy lives.
One such rural health facility is the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center (VAMC) located in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Let’s revisit the Jack C. Montgomery VAMC to learn more about the facility, current career openings, and the city of Muskogee.
Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center
Located in Muskogee, which is the 13th largest city in Oklahoma, the Jack C. Montgomery VAMC is part of the Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System. While the facility has gone through a few name changes since its founding, the medical center initially opened its doors on Flag Day, June 14, 1923, as the Soldiers Memorial Hospital to provide care for Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas World War I Veterans.
The hospital was then renamed “Veterans Administration Hospital, Muskogee, Oklahoma” in 1930 when President Herbert Hoover created the Veterans Administration, before receiving its current name in 2006 in honor of Jack Cleveland Montgomery, a U.S. Army officer and a member of the Cherokee nation. A World War II Veteran, Montgomery received several military decorations for his actions, including two Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars, and the Medal of Honor—the United States’ highest award for valor in action against an enemy.
Today, the Jack C. Montgomery VAMC boasts a full range of health services, from audiology and endocrinology, to optometry and pain management. As of February 2025, 91% of Veteran patients report they can get an urgent primary care appointment when they need it.
Muskogee, Oklahoma
50 miles off of Route 66, you’ll find Muskogee—a city rich in history, outdoor adventure and small-town warmth. Originally a trading post along the Arkansas River, Muskogee grew into an important hub for railroads, commerce, and culture in Indian Territory. It later gained national recognition through the classic country song “Okie from Muskogee,” which helped define the town’s identity as a proud, close-knit community.
Today, Muskogee blends its historical roots with family-friendly attractions and a welcoming spirit. History buffs can explore the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, located in the historic Union Agency building, or step aboard the USS Batfish, a WWII-era submarine at the War Memorial Park. During the spring, don’t miss Honor Heights Park, home to the breathtaking Azalea Festival and over 30,000 blooming flowers each April.
Whether you’re enjoying live music downtown, attending a cultural event, or simply soaking in the scenery of Oklahoma’s green hills, Muskogee offers a slower pace and a strong sense of community.
