A mineral is a naturally occuring inorganic solid substance that has a definite chemical composition. Minerals are characterized by their crystalline structure, color, and hardness.

Rocks are composed of minerals. Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on earth. Other common minerals found in the crust are olivine, pyroxene, amphibole, mica, and feldspar.
