January Podcasters Needed!

OK, folks, time to call in some favors. As we mentioned, we have a lot of the year covered in terms of user-submitted podcasts but people have been tending to sign up later in the year. We need people to be brave and help us out on the front end.

The open dates in January are:

9
10
13
18
21
23
29
 31

So we need eight (8) people to save the day and volunteer to contribute on these days.

Bloggers, send out the word please. If you haven't signed up yet, please join in now!

Thanks!

Podcast: Sample Episode: Big Numbers

Michael from Slacker Astronomy gives us one small example of what a podcast for 365 Days of Astronomy might sound like. His topic is big numbers (like a yadabyte or a septillion), scientific notation and logarithms. Do you know how many suns you'd have to line up end to end to go all the way across the Milky Way galaxy? You'll find out!

This episode is sponsored by Clockwork Active Media Systems.

Theme song by George Hrab.

What you need to do, summarized

  1. You need to subscribe to the podcast and subscribe to the blog.
  2. You should really man up and volunteer to record a podcast. We'll help you.
  3. You or your employer may wish to sponsor some podcasts.

You've probably noticed that 2009 is getting closer every day!

We'll have some demo episodes up soon to further inspire you. We are going to be badgering people very soon to help us fill some dates in January. The good news is we have a lot of dates filled throughout the year. The bad news is, we haven't filled January!

You can achieve #2 indirectly by badgering people you know that might be good candidates to make a podcast. It's easy and fun and we've had a ton of people sign up. If they can do it so can you. Spread the word 'cause the more people that participate the more fun it will be for everyone.

The main, final, official feeds

Podcast RSS feed:

iTunes feed:

Blog RSS feed:

We'll be using libsyn to post and host the podcasts, but we thought we would use a feedburner feed in case we ever need to change the feed URL. Note the podcast feed is for the podcasts only, you won't see any of the blog posts on it. The blog feed will contain blog posts and podcasts. The goal is that a new episode will be posted automatically on each feed every day in 2009.

Podcast: Hello World!

Hey everyone.

We are priming the feed and getting the pipeline ready for the podcast. To that end, and for your listening pleasure, we have the first podcast! Pamela Gay and Michael Koppelman discuss the podcast and encourage you to participate. We also debut our great theme song by George Hrab. We are going to be working on some things in regards to the feed so it's possible things get weird for a while. We'll sound the all clear when the final feed is in place and working. Please email us with your feedback.

The “rules”

Just wanted to let you know that we added a rule to our list of rules on the Join In page. These rules are meant to help -- please email us if you find something unreasonable. We think it's all pretty reasonable. The recently added rule is:

All podcasts should be premiering at least some content. We don't want to solely re-broadcast previously published material. It is OK if you include excerpts of your previously published material in your podcast and we encourage you to direct people to more information.

I may have misled some people in a comment to a previous post. You can use previously published material in your podcast, but we are asking people to produce a podcast specifically for 365 Days of Astronomy.

Hope that makes sense. Please act now if you want to contribute a podcast or two! If you can't think of a topic, email us, tell us a little about yourself and we'll help you think of ideas or put you in touch with other complimentary people.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock...

Sponsor a day for $25

Producing 365 podcasts isn't free. Through a variety of sponsorships we hope to raise enough money to pay students to do the post-production work on the podcast. 100% of the money we collect goes to the production of the podcast and associated materials.
To that end we are offering sponsorships for $25 per day. Like the podcasts, [...]

Sign-up updates

We've been sorting through the emails and are very encouraged with what we are seeing. If everyone gets the number of shows they signed up for, we have 40% of the 365 days covered already! We hope this motivates you to sign up! But don't worry, there will be plenty of days for everyone.

Get set…

We've gotten a great response in our first few days. Please keep it up! What we want to happen is exactly what is happening -- we are getting interest from first timers and experienced podcasters and from students, amateurs, grad students and professionals.
A podcast per day is pretty ambitious. We can't do this alone. We need [...]
