- 64-bit processing and Photoshop
-
Does Photoshop CS5 support native 64-bit processing?
Yes. Photoshop CS5 runs 64-bit native on Mac OS X, Microsoft® Windows Vista®, and Windows® 7 platforms. It can also run in 32-bit mode across platforms.
What are the advantages of 64-bit computing?
Those who work with extremely large files should realize noticeably greater gains in performance, in some cases as dramatic as ten times the previous speed. This is because 64-bit applications can address larger amounts of memory and thus result in less file swapping — one of the biggest factors that can affect data processing speed. (Requires a 64-bit-capable computer with a 64-bit version of Mac OS, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. Actual performance varies depending on amount of RAM, driver types, and other factors.) For more details, read the independent benchmark report (PDF, 1.15 MB)
Will previous versions of Photoshop receive an update for 64-bit native support?
Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended for Windows Vista run 64-bit native, but 64-bit native support will not be available for earlier versions of Photoshop.

Why should I buy a Creative Suite 5 edition instead of an individual CS component?
If your creative workflow requires multiple Adobe components, you can save money when you purchase a Creative Suite 5 edition instead of individual CS components. Depending on the Creative Suite 5 edition you purchase, you can save up to 60% when purchasing a CS5 suite edition compared to buying the individual components that make up that edition. If you've been using individual Adobe CS components, you may be eligible for special pricing when upgrading to a suite edition. To better meet the needs of our customers and to simplify our product lineup, we have decided to discontinue Web Standard. If you are a web professional, visit the CS5 Web Premium page to learn more about Web Premium.
Will Adobe continue to support Web Standard?
Adobe does not plan to make any changes to the existing complimentary and paid support programs that are enjoyed by our customers. For details on these programs, visit the Adobe support page.

CS Review is included with CS Live. To start using CS Review you must create a CS Live account. Learn more about how to Get CS Live.
Does all CS5 software integrate with CS Review?
Adobe Photoshop® CS5 Extended, Photoshop CS5, InDesign CS5, and Illustrator® CS5 all integrate with CS Review. Integration with CS Review will not be available for Adobe Premiere® Pro CS5 when the software initially ships. Integration capability is expected to be available for Adobe Premiere Pro users later in 2010. In order to use CS Review with Adobe Premiere Pro, customers will need to install a future update.
How can I access CS Review in each of the CS5 desktop applications with which it integrates?
There are multiple access points in each application. CS Review can primarily be accessed through the CS Live menu, located in the upper right corner of the toolbar in your application. Integration with CS Review will not be available in initial shipping versions of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. In order to use CS Review with Adobe Premiere Pro, customers will need to install a future update.
What do my clients and design peers need in order to use CS Review?
They will need a web browser and high-speed Internet connection. Additionally, your clients and peers must have either an active Acrobat.com account, which is free and easy to set up, or their own CS Live subscription. For more information on how to create a free Acrobat.com account, see the Acrobat.com FAQ.
What kind of creative content can I upload for review online?
CS Review allows you to create and share a review that contains page layouts, illustrations, or image comps/photographs created in CS5 desktop software. Later in 2010, CS Review will add the ability to create and share a review that contains video sequences.
What are the system requirements and available languages for CS Review?
See CS Live system requirements for a table that shows which services are available by language. Adobe is currently evaluating options to expand CS Live services to more languages.
How can I get support for CS Review?
Visit CS Live Help for CS Review support.
Is there a cost to my clients or design peers who wish to use CS Review?
No. There is no cost to your clients or design peers who wish to access and make comments on a review using a web browser.
Why do I need a subscription to CS Live but my clients and peers do not?
A subscription is required only to create a review in CS Review, not to participate in a review created by someone else.
Can you share a review from outside the CS5 desktop application?
Yes, you can upload a review and share it using the CS Review web client. This requires that you save your design as a JPEG file for uploading to the web, which takes extra steps. That said, the ability to create a review from within the CS Review web client allows CS Review to be used in an agency environment where someone other than the designer may be responsible for sharing reviews with clients and managing the review process.
Using CS Review
Does CS Review integrate with Acrobat.com?
Yes. CS Review uses the reliable Acrobat.com servers to ensure your reviews are available online and more secure. For more information on security, review the security section of this FAQ.
Are any of the Acrobat.com features usable with CS Review?
CS Review users can take advantage of personal and shared workspaces as well as the file organizer available on Acrobat.com. For more information on these features, review the Acrobat.com section of this FAQ.
How do my clients know that I have shared a review with them?
After you create a review you can then share it using the share functionality in Acrobat.com. An email is automatically created that includes a URL link to the review. Once the reviewer receives the email, he or she can then click the link, log in to Acrobat.com, and begin making comments on a review.
What happens if the reviewer loses the email or link to the review?
The reviewer can log in to Acrobat.com and find the review in the file organizer.

- Upgrade eligibility, pricing, and purchasing options
-
What's the best way to find out what products and upgrades are available for me?
If you know what product(s) you currently own, use the upgrade eligibility tool to find out which upgrades you are eligible for.
If you're buying Creative Suite products for the first time, use the suite selector tool to determine which suite edition is right for you.
What is Adobe's tiered upgrade pricing policy?
Adobe's tiered upgrade pricing policy offers customers who upgrade at every release a lower upgrade price relative to customers who upgrade less frequently. This means that customers upgrading to Creative Suite 5 from Creative Suite 4 will pay a lower upgrade price compared to customers upgrading from an earlier version of Creative Suite.
Why does Adobe offer tiered upgrade pricing?
Customers who upgrade regularly have long requested better pricing compared to those who upgrade infrequently. Adobe introduced tiered upgrade pricing in 2008, with the launch of Creative Suite 4, to reward these customers.
Does tiered pricing also apply to individual Creative Suite components?
No. The tiered upgrade policy applies only to editions of Adobe Creative Suite and not to upgrades to individual components, such as After Effects, Flash Professional, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and so on. Customers can upgrade to the CS5 version of individual CS components from up to three versions back. The only exception is Adobe Premiere Pro; customers can upgrade to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 from any earlier version of Adobe Premiere.
I don't know what version I own. How can I find out if I'm eligible for upgrade pricing?
From within any of your individual Adobe products, select the menu item "About [product name]," which will open a dialog box that displays which version you own. Then check either the upgrade eligibility table on the CS5 upgrade information page or the upgrade eligibility tool to determine which upgrades you are eligible for.
If you are interested in upgrading to a specific CS5 product, you can check that product's upgrade eligibility page. The link for the upgrade eligibility page is located on the right side of the product's web pages.
What if I got my product as part of a suite edition? How will I know which suite edition it is part of?
There are several options to determine which edition of Creative Suite is installed on your computer:
- If you've registered your software, your product registration details will show your suite edition and serial number. Check your registration details by logging in to your account on Adobe.com and clicking the "View product registrations" link.
- For Creative Suite 4 and Creative Suite 3 editions, you can determine the suite edition by doing the following:
- In Windows, go to Start > All Programs and check the Creative Suite edition.
- In Mac OS, users can identify which suite edition is installed via the uninstaller (go to Applications\Utilities\Adobe Installers). For example, the uninstaller will say "Design Premium," "Web Premium," or whichever other suite edition was installed.
- For earlier versions of Creative Suite or Macromedia® Studio, check your installation CD or DVD for the suite edition.
Am I eligible for upgrade pricing from an earlier Creative Suite edition to an individual CS component?
No. Adobe does not offer upgrade pricing for customers wishing to move from a suite edition to an individual CS component. For complete upgrade information for the product you are interested in, consult that product's upgrade eligibility page or the general upgrade information page. You can also use the upgrade eligibility tool to determine which upgrades you are eligible for based on the products you currently own.
I am a current Creative Suite Web Standard customer. What are my upgrade options?
Current Web Standard customers are eligible for the same upgrade pricing as customers who own other editions of Creative Suite. Web Standard customer should use the upgrade eligibility tool to determine which upgrades they are eligible for.
I just purchased CS4 Web Standard after you announced Creative Suite 5. What are my options?
Customers who purchased CS4 Web Standard after the announcement of Creative Suite 5 should call Customer Service for more information about their options.
I am a Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) or Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP) customer and purchased Web Standard and Upgrade Plan. Since Adobe has discontinued Web Standard, what do I get now as an upgrade?
If you are a TLP or CLP customer and have purchased Web Standard with Upgrade Plan, you will automatically receive an upgrade to CS5 Web Premium. Contact Customer Service for more information.
How can I purchase Adobe Creative Suite 5 software?
There are two main ways to purchase Adobe software:
- Buy from Adobe: Buy and download Adobe software to start using it immediately, or choose to have the product shipped to you.
- Buy from a reseller: Whether you're looking for a local retail store or a value-added reseller, Adobe has an extensive network of partners. To locate Adobe Authorized Resellers in your area, visit the find a reseller page.
I just purchased an upgrade version of a CS5 product. How do I know if I have fulfilled the eligibility requirements?
Before you open your upgrade of CS5 software, read the upgrade information page to ensure you are a licensed user of eligible Adobe or Macromedia software.
Does Adobe offer education discounts?
Yes. Qualifying full-time or part-time students, faculty, and staff of accredited educational institutions can purchase education versions of Adobe products at a reduced price. Learn more about Creative Suite 5 for education and eligibility requirements.
Does Adobe offer volume licensing?
Yes. You may qualify for a discount on software through Adobe Volume Licensing (AVL). Learn more about volume licensing, or have a licensing specialist contact you.
What are your recommendations on buying for a team?
The Creative Suite 5 editions address the needs of various creative roles within a multidiscipline team. As you learn about the CS5 products and review your purchasing options, consider the requirements of each of the roles and individuals on your team. To learn more about CS5 for teams, refer to the "For corporate customers" section of each suite edition's product pages (accessible on the right side of the page). You can also use the suite selector tool to determine which suite editions are right for your team, or have a licensing specialist contact you.

Am I eligible for upgrade pricing from a previous Creative Suite edition to a standalone CS component?
No. You cannot upgrade from a Creative Suite edition to an individual CS component. To confirm your options and learn about the requirements for upgrades, check the upgrade eligibility page of the product you wish to purchase. Among other requirements, you must be able to provide the serial number for the product you wish to upgrade during installation.
Am I able to switch a single-user copy of a qualifying Adobe product from one language to another?
Yes. If you are upgrading from an earlier qualifying version of an Adobe product to the newest version, you can upgrade across languages. To move from one language to another in the current version, you will have to call Customer Service in your region for eligibility and fulfillment. There may be a cost. Restrictions apply. See the service note.
What is the three version back product upgrade policy?
Adobe allows upgrades to the current version of Creative Suite products and components from three versions back. For example, if you have a validly licensed copy of Photoshop CS2, CS3, or CS4, you can upgrade to Photoshop CS5. You are not eligible for upgrade pricing if you are a Photoshop CS or earlier customer. The exception to this rule is Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Premiere, which allow upgrades to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 from any validly licensed earlier version. Prices vary depending on which version you are upgrading from (see next question).
If you do own a version older than three versions back of any product other than Adobe Premiere or Adobe Premiere Pro, then you will need to purchase at the full retail price.
What is tiered upgrade pricing?
Adobe has two levels of upgrade pricing for Creative Suite 5 editions: one price for customers who are upgrading from CS2 or CS3, and a lower price for customers who are upgrading from CS4.
Why does Adobe offer tiered upgrade pricing?
Creative Suite customers who upgrade regularly have long requested better pricing compared to those who upgrade infrequently. Adobe introduced tiered upgrade pricing to reward these customers.
Does tiered pricing also apply to individual CS components?
No. The tiered upgrade policy applies only to editions of Adobe Creative Suite and not to upgrades to individual CS components.
I purchased a Creative Suite 4 edition around the time Creative Suite 5 was announced. Am I eligible for a free upgrade?
You may be eligible. Call Customer Service in your region for more information.
Can I upgrade from a validly licensed education version of a CS2, CS33, or CS4 product to a noneducation version of a CS5 product?
Yes, you may purchase upgrades for education versions provided you meet the upgrade eligibility requirements. For requirements, pricing, or to place your single-user license order, visit the Adobe.com Store in your region. For additional sales information about education versions of Adobe products, see the service note.
Can I upgrade from a volume license product to a boxed product?
No. Adobe does not permit individual end users to upgrade components of their TLP or CLP license to individual shrinkwrapped software.
Can I upgrade my validly licensed individual boxed Adobe product to a volume license?
Yes, provided you meet the upgrade eligibility requirements. For customers who want to move from shrinkwrapped software to a volume license, we also offer a credit against past qualifying purchases. For details and requirements, visit the Adobe Volume Licensing page.

Does Adobe have trial versions of Adobe Creative Suite 5?
Yes. To help you evaluate Adobe's creative software for upgrade or new purchase, we offer "try and buy" versions of the premium editions of Adobe® Creative Suite® 5 as well as most individual CS5 products, such as Adobe Photoshop® CS5 Extended and Flash® Professional CS5, in many of the languages in which we ship. These trial versions offer almost every feature and function of the product for you to test-drive.* In most cases, the trials can easily be converted to purchased versions without needing to reinstall the software.
The trial period begins on the first day you launch the software and continues for 30 days (a counter appears each time you launch to help you track the elapsed time). When the trial expires, you must purchase the software to continue using it.
Adobe Encore® CS5 software is not available as a trial. Encore CS5 will be installed as part of the trial for Creative Suite 5 Production Premium and Master Collection but will not be available for use until you purchase. The trial versions of Adobe After Effects® CS5, Adobe Premiere® Pro CS5, and Soundbooth® CS5 software do not include some features that depend on software licensed from parties other than Adobe. For example, some codecs for encoding MPEG formats are available only with the full version of these products.

How do I get a product trial?
You have two choices:
- Download a trial version of an individual CS5 product, such as Photoshop CS5 Extended or Flash Professional CS5, or any of the Creative Suite 5 premium editions (for example, Design Premium or Web Premium) directly from the Adobe.com download pages at no charge.
- Purchase a trial DVD set of any of the Creative Suite 5 premium editions from the Adobe Store.
What does it cost to get a Creative Suite 5 trial DVD set, and why is there a charge?
Prices for the trial DVDs are listed in the following chart and include shipping and handling. This charge helps cover the cost of producing and distributing the DVD sets.
U.S. dollar (in U.S.) Euro Japanese yen British pound Australian dollar U.S. dollar (outside U.S.) Design Premium US$9.99 €9.99 ¥1,500 £8.99 A$15.44 US$14.99 Web Premium US$9.99 €9.99 ¥1,500 £8.99 A$15.44 US$14.99 Production Premium US$9.99 €9.99 ¥1,500 £8.99 A$15.44 US$14.99 Master Collection US$14.99 €14.99 ¥2,300 £13.99 A$23.63 US$22.99 A DVD set can serve as your backup media if you choose to convert from trial to purchase at the end of 30 days. (Alternatively, you can choose to have a full product box delivered to you when you purchase, and simply use that serial number to convert the trial you already installed.)
What if I get a trial version of a Creative Suite 5 edition, but have time to try only one or two components in the 30-day trial period? Can I still try the others later?
No. Each edition of Creative Suite 5 is a complete integrated product that is bound by the 30-day trial period. For example, Creative Suite 5 Design Premium integrates these components: Photoshop CS5 Extended, Illustrator CS5, InDesign CS5, Flash Catalyst™ CS5, Flash Professional CS5, Dreamweaver CS5, Fireworks CS5, Acrobat 9 Pro, Adobe Bridge CS5, and Adobe Device Central CS5. Launching any one of these initiates the 30-day trial period. You must then evaluate these components within the 30-day window.
Can I extend the trial period longer than 30 days?
Unfortunately, you may not extend a trial version once it expires at the end of 30 days, nor can you install another copy of the same trial version onto the same computer to try again.
Can I convert my trial to a purchased version?
Yes. If you have tried an individual product such as Photoshop CS5 Extended, you can either convert that directly to the same product or convert it to one of the Creative Suite 5 editions that contains Photoshop CS5 Extended. Alternatively, if you tried an edition of Creative Suite 5 but decide to buy an individual component that is part of that edition, you can simply enter the serial number for the purchased product to convert your trial to the individual component you purchased.
Can I try Acrobat 9 Pro with my Creative Suite software trial?
Acrobat 9 Pro is not available as a trial and is not included in the trial version of any suite editions. However, the full version of Acrobat 9 Pro is included in the full version of Master Collection, Design Premium, Design Standard, and Web Premium available for purchase.
How do I try Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 or After Effects CS5 if I have a 32-bit processor?
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and After Effects CS5 require a 64-bit Intel® processor. You must have a 64-bit Intel processor to try the software.
If you decide to purchase Creative Suite 5 Master Collection, Creative Suite 5 Production Premium, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, or After Effects CS5, complimentary 32-bit compatible versions of Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and After Effects CS4 will be provided with your purchase.

Can I use Adobe CS Live online services* with my trial version?
Yes. CS Live online services can be accessed from within certain CS5 editions and individual products, streamlining workflow and helping to improve productivity. CS Live services are complimentary for a limited time. Learn more about Adobe CS Live.
How do I set up access to CS Live online services during my trial period?
To set up access to CS Live during your trial, simply enter your Adobe ID in the trial screen that loads when you launch your product. If you do not have an Adobe ID, click the "Create an Adobe ID" button in the trial screen and follow the prompts to create your ID. You will also need to read and agree to any applicable online services terms of use.
Converting your trial
How do I convert my trial to a purchased version of the product?
Creative Suite 5 trials are "try and buy," meaning you can evaluate individual products or editions of Creative Suite 5 and then convert the installed trial to a full version by purchasing the product and entering the serial number at any time during or after the trial period. If you have tried an individual product such as Photoshop CS5 Extended, you can either convert that directly to the same product or convert it to one of the Creative Suite 5 editions that contains Photoshop CS5 Extended. Alternatively, if you tried an edition of Creative Suite 5 but decide to buy an individual component that is part of that edition, you can simply enter the serial number for the purchased product to convert your trial to the individual component you want.
Converting your trial is simple:
- Purchase the software through the online Adobe Store (as an electronic download or as a shipped product) or from your preferred authorized reseller, store, or catalog. If you plan to purchase through the Adobe Store, simply click the button in the application trial countdown screen to purchase the product and follow the prompts to obtain a serial number. Note that product availability may differ from region to region.
- Enter the serial number from your purchase into the product screen that counts down the remaining days in the trial. You can enter a serial number to convert the trial at any time during the 30-day trial period or after the trial ends.
Note: If you are converting a Creative Suite 5 Design Premium, Web Premium, or Master Collection trial to a purchased version, you will need to install and serialize Acrobat 9 Pro separately. - Optional: If you purchased an electronic download from the Adobe Store, log in to your account and download any additional available content or applications for the product you purchased. You can use your Adobe ID and password to access this content for up to three years after the product is released. If you purchased through a channel other than the Adobe Store and are converting from an individual CS5 product to a suite edition or to a different individual product, you may need to install the additional applications on your computer.
What if I tried multiple CS5 products?
If you tried multiple products and purchased a suite edition that contains both, you can enter the suite edition serial number in one of the components and the other one will automatically pick up the serial number. You will need to install the additional components contained in the suite edition. If you tried individual CS5 products and bought them as single products, you can simply enter the serial numbers in the respective products.
I am a volume licensing customer. Can I convert a trial to a purchased version using a volume licensing serial number?
Yes, Adobe Volume Licensing customers can also convert trials by simply entering a valid license serial number. Contact your reseller or authorized Adobe License Center to place a volume licensing order. Note: To convert Acrobat 9 Pro, you must download and install a different version for volume licenses.
Under what circumstances would I need to uninstall or reinstall the trial product(s) when converting my trial?
Creative Suite 5 products have multiple language versions available in the same software version. When you are converting your trial, the serial number's language must match the installed language of the application in order for it to be accepted in the serialization screen. If you purchased a product in a language other than the language of your trial, but the language of your purchased product is part of the same set of languages included in your trial version, you can simply go back to the original installer (whether DVD or electronic download), install the correct language, and then enter your serial number. However, if you purchased a product in a language that is not contained in the language sets in your trial software, then you will need to locate the installer for that language set to install the correct language from your purchased software.
The following is a list of the languages included in each language set:
- Americas: English, French Canadian, International English, Spanish
- Japan: International English, Japanese
- Continental Europe: Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, French, German, International English, Italian, Spanish
- Asia: Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, International English, Korean
- Nordics: Danish, Finnish, International English, Norwegian, Swedish
- Eastern Europe: Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian
How do I uninstall my trial software?
To uninstall your trial version, close any open Adobe software on your computer and do the following:
- In Windows, open the Windows Control Panel and double-click Add or Remove Programs. Select the product you want to uninstall, click Change/Remove, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
- In Mac OS, double-click the product installer in Applications > Utilities > Adobe Installers. Authenticate as an administrator, select Uninstall Components, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
Am I eligible for upgrade pricing when I convert my trial?
Yes, provided you have a qualifying earlier version of Adobe software. In this case, you may purchase an upgrade to convert your trial to a purchased version. To verify that you have an earlier version that qualifies you for the software you're purchasing, navigate to the product area that you're interested in buying and click the upgrade eligibility link. When you enter the purchased serial number to activate your trial for ongoing use, the installer will search your hard drive for the qualifying software. If it doesn't find it, it will prompt you for the serial number of your earlier version. If that serial number does not work, you can contact Adobe Customer Service in your region for further assistance.
Should I make a backup copy of the trial software and additional content?
Yes, if you choose the download option when converting a trial to a purchased version, we highly recommend making a backup copy and keeping it together with the serial number. That way, if you get a new computer or have to rebuild an existing machine, you have everything you need to efficiently reinstall your Adobe creative software. Alternatively, follow the instructions in the email receipt to log in and download your software for up to three years after you purchase. If you had the software shipped from Adobe or a reseller at purchase, that package serves as your backup version.
I work on two computers. Once I have converted the trial version to a purchased version, can I then install the purchased version on a second machine?
The software license agreement accompanying your product may entitle you to install and activate the software on two systems with certain restrictions. Please see the software license agreement for more information.

Does Creative Suite 5 support PowerPC® based systems?
No. In September 2009 Adobe announced that beginning with CS5, Creative Suite products and components will run on Intel based Mac computers with no support for installation on PowerPC based systems.
I am a Creative Suite customer who currently uses a PowerPC based computer. Will my current version also run on an Intel based Mac, or do I have to buy a new version?
Creative Suite 3 and 4 products are built on a Universal Binary, so they can be installed on either a PowerPC based Mac or an Intel based Mac that meets the minimum system requirements.
I am a customer running an earlier version of Creative Suite software on a PowerPC based system. What are my options for upgrading to Creative Suite 5 if I upgrade my hardware?
Adobe has a number of upgrade paths available to current Creative Suite customers. Visit the upgrade page for full details.
I am a volume licensing customer. How do I get updates for my Creative Suite components?
Adobe recommends following your company's in-house guidance for managing updates. Contact the IT person who manages your Adobe licenses for information about corporate policies on updating software.
Will Adobe continue to support the version of Creative Suite that I am currently running on PowerPC?
Adobe does not plan to make any changes to the existing complimentary and paid support programs that are enjoyed by our customers. For details on these programs, visit the support page.
I use a number of plug-ins with my current version of Creative Suite. What support will be offered for these products running on a PowerPC based system?
For third-party products, contact the manufacturer for guidance on its ongoing support for the PowerPC platform.
Will Adobe continue to release patches for PowerPC based systems running Creative Suite?
No, Adobe will no longer develop for this platform other than for critical issues that may arise.
Why did Adobe make this decision?
Creative Suite customers benefit from working on the latest hardware and operating systems. The majority of PowerPC platform users have transitioned to more current configurations, prompting Adobe to suspend support for the PowerPC platform.
