Hurricane Nate spared Bermuda on Thursday, bringing only heavy rains as it passed well south of the island.

The outer bands of the Category One hurricane dumped 0.75 inches (1.9 centimeters) of rain on the British territory, while winds reached about 50 mph (80 mph), the Bermuda Weather Service said.

"We were lucky," said Khamla Smith of the weather service. "We definitely did not get the worst case scenario with this storm."

The island downgraded a hurricane watch to a tropical storm warning, meaning winds exceeding 39 mph (63 kph) are possible within 24 …
